Seagrass interim report - June 2026

By Tiziana Tedoldi | Seawilding General Manager

This is an interim report, with a more detailed update to follow in a few weeks as we reach the end of this year's active seagrass restoration season.

Last month, we welcomed volunteers from across the UK to Loch Craignish for our annual seagrass harvest, processing and planting event. We harvested around 6,000 seagrass plants which were bundled into bunches of five, weighted with steel washers and planted out in a restoration area measuring about 1,200 m2 - the size of an Olympic swimming pool. Planting is continuing this week with the support of volunteers.

At the same time, we are establishing seagrass at multiple trial sites beyond Loch Craignish, exploring whether we can replicate the success we've achieved there in other locations. This work is both fascinating and labour-intensive, involving a growing number of volunteers and local communities. It marks an exciting milestone, as it is the first time Seawilding has applied our restoration techniques beyond Loch Craignish. Overall, we expect to restore approximately half a hectare of seagrass this year—building on last year's achievements. If these trial sites prove successful, we hope to scale up restoration further in 2027.

Meanwhile, this spring we launched the Seawilding Restoration School to train our community project partners in our restoration techniques. The first course, Advanced Snorkel Techniques, took place in May. This four-day programme equips participants with the skills and confidence needed to safely take part in the snorkelling activities essential for marine habitat restoration projects.

In August, we will deliver two further courses: Skills in Seagrass Restoration and Skills in Mapping and Monitoring Seagrass. Both courses are already fully booked, with waiting lists in place. It is hugely encouraging to see so many people eager to develop these practical restoration skills. The enthusiasm and commitment of volunteers and community partners give us real confidence for the future of marine restoration.
