In our bid to bring Palliative care close to communities, we met Joseph who has advanced colorectal cancer. Joseph leaves in Masindi District in the Western part of Uganda. He was advised to go to the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala which is 213 KM (3 hours’ drive by road), but he couldn’t afford the cost of transport to Kampala and treatment. Hoima Regional Referral Hospital referred him to Hospice Africa Uganda on the day of his discharge, and we have been treating him through our home visits treatment program where patients who cannot walk or transport themselves to the Hospital are visited by our nurses and cared for at their premises.
He was on a lot of pain when Nurse Hanifah from Little Hospice Hoima (Hospice Africa Uganda site in western Uganda) saw him, she gave him morphine to help manage his pain, and then enrolled him on our program. Joseph is now stable and at home pain free and comfortable. He is one of many patients who can’t access treatment for cancer for various reasons.
