This project aims to provide pain relief and comfort to the critically ill and those near end-of-life in Uganda, many of whom do not have access to vital health services. In Uganda almost 500,000 people are in need of palliative care (WHO report). Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) today has clinics in Kampala, Mbarara and Hoima. Over the last 30 years, almost 40,000 people have been cared for by HAU. Our model of delivery brings palliative care right into the heart of communities through outreaches.
Over 90% of people in Uganda with cancer will not access health services due to the inability to afford treatment or residing in remote areas that are far away from healthcare facilities. This means that cancer and other life-limiting illnesses go untreated resulting into suffering for patients. Patients are unable to work and provide for their families, contributing to extreme household poverty. Hospice Africa Uganda research shows that critically ill people prefer to be treated in their homes.
We provide free palliative care in patients' homes and through community outreach and roadside clinics in areas of dire need and manage pain with oral liquid morphine produced at our site. Our care is holistic, with counselling and spiritual guidance. We also provide funds for food and other basic needs for those living in poverty. The more donor support we receive the more patients in the community we can care for, ensuring a pain-free and comfortable end of life surrounded by their families.
For every community outreach we hold, an average of 60 patients are impacted. Our outreach brings us to the heart of deprived areas where patients are unable to access regular health services. Without our support, many of these patients will suffer and die in pain at home. With your support, we can increase our ability to bring palliative care closer to the communities. We can provide pain relief, which will positively impact not only patients but also their families in terms of cost and respite
