Orkeeswa School Scholarship Fund Update

By Lindsay Lynch | Development Operations Manager

Over the past few months, Orkeeswa's 10th grade students went to local primary schools where they became teachers, coaches and mentors as part of our Outreach Program. Orkeeswa's outreach program serves nearly 5000 primary school students across eight local schools who engage in academic support, life skills, and sports programming taught daily by Orkeeswa students and alumni. This community service model allows Orkeeswa mentors help shape the furture of these young students by acting as a role model and demonstrating the power of education and its ability to create opportunity.

We are excited to share with you our students' experiences and their thoughts on giving back to the community:

"Giving back to my community is very important because, through the knowledge and skills I got from school I can transform my community into a better place than it was before." -Amina

"On the last day of community service I was very sad because the students were amazing, I did not want to leave them. I was also happy because it was time for me to continue with school. Generally, community service has impacted my life so much. I became a teach for a few months, a counselor and a coach. I have never been one before so it was a great experience. Community service has sharpened my career path." -Bahati

"Giving back to my community is very important because I believe my community has a lot to learn and change. The only way to change is through us, who got education. For example the issue of cultural practices like early marriage and denial of education to girls. If my community sees us they will get a sense of how education is important to their children and take initiatives."-Daniel

"It is very important that I give back to my community because I belong there. I know changes are brought by people like us, people with education and vision. I may be a reason for a change in my community because when the parents  see me, they will allow their children, especially girls, to attend school."-Einoth

"Giving back to my community is very important because I believe my community needs people like us who see the challenges and are willing to take action. Also giving back to my community inspires others to do the same thing, or those who are growing need to take the right paths to get to where we are."-Godwin

Through accessible, high-quality, community-based education and leadership development, Orkeeswa cultivates thoughtful decision-makers and creative problem-solvers prepared to achieve their own vision for impact. Orkeeswa Outreach utilizes trained and motivated Orkeeswa student and alumni leaders to run holistic programming in local primary schools. We are creating a self-sustaining model of community-based education where young leaders are empowered to make a tangible impact on the next generation.
