Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering’s (FAME, Inc.) CORE STEM Enrichment (Fall to Spring) school year session began on Saturday, October 1st from 9am-12pm at Alexis I. duPont High School in Wilmington, Delaware. The Fall to Spring session will take place two Saturdays per month, for all enrolled students (grades 7-12), and will conclude on Saturday, May 20th 2017. In July of 2017, FAME will host a closing ceremony to recognize, honor, and award program participants.
Since the beginning of the Fall to Spring session, FAME students have been engaged in rigorous Problem Based Learning (PBL) activities that focus on the following academic areas: English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Technology, Science Lecture, and Science Lab. In addition to academic learning, students have also had the opportunity to visit local industry leaders to become introduced to real-life STEM professionals and careers. One such visit brought FAME students to the Fraunhofer USA Center for Molecular Biotechnology in Newark, Delaware. Students were able to gather together and explore the cutting edge biotech laboratory located right here in the First State. CORE youth received the incredible opportunity to learn, experiment, and see first-hand how plants are used to cure and fight off molecular diseases. All students present had a wonderful time on the site visit with Fraunhofer reps!
Fraunhofer USA is a unique institution conducting translational research in the area of pharmaceutical biotechnology, utilizing cutting-edge technologies to advance products for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders. Fraunhofer USA is a not-for-profit research organization that occupies a 56,000 square foot building containing state-of-the-art laboratories, plant-growth facilities and a 12,000 square foot pilot production facility with the capacity to make gram quantities of protein products. FAME is delighted to have introduced our CORE STEM Enrichment students to the innovation and opportunities present at the Fraunhofer USA Center for Molecular Biotechnology. We look forward to “growing” our relationship with Fraunhofer USA in through the New Year!
