Throughout the summer of 2016, Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering (FAME, Inc.) students were engaged in over 140 hours, per student, of rigorous Problem Based Learning in the academic areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Technology, Science Lecture, and Science Lab. In addition to academic learning, students also had the opportunity to visit local industry leaders to become introduced to real-life STEM professionals and careers. With the support of FAME’s academic staff, students built upon prior knowledge gained from previous sessions and worked together in cooperative groups to learn, design, and build drones using reverse engineering techniques and 3D printing.
FAME’s 2016 STEM Enrichment summer sessions were held over 4 and 6 consecutive weeks from early June to late July. Participating students entering grades 7-10 attended 6 weeks of programming, Monday to Thursday, for 7 hours per day (8am – 3pm) at Alexis I. duPont High School in Wilmington, Delaware. Students entering grades 11 and 12 received the incredible opportunity to live on-campus, hosted by the University of Delaware’s College of Engineering. Students resided on campus Monday to Friday and engaged in 4 weeks of college-level courses designed specifically to prepare them for the rigors of pursuing a STEM related degree in college.
On July 22, 2016 students attending programming at the University of Delaware (rising 11th and 12th graders) celebrated with a closing ceremony. During the ceremony, students were awarded in subject areas of Highest Achievement in English, Science, and Mathematics. Other Student Awards were also offered for the categories of Most Improved, Best Citizen, and overall Highest Achiever. Another ceremony entitled, “Reverse, Rewind, Reengineer: FAME Remix” was held for our rising 7th-10th grade students on July 28, 2016 at Alexis I. duPont High School. Attendees were treated to group presentations that demonstrated the culmination of the 6 week-long projects that students completed. In addition to recognizing the accomplishments of our lower school students, the celebration also highlighted our 2016 graduating senior class and welcomed these students into the ranks of FAME Alumni. Twenty graduating seniors became FAME alum and are currently enrolled to attend the following schools and universities: University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Clark University, Old Dominion University, Pennsylvania State, Hampton University, Duke University, Virginia State University, Delaware Technical, Villanova, North Carolina A&T, Johnson & Wales University, and Syracuse. Audience members consisted of parents, family, friends, FAME community partners, and supporters.
FAME’s 2016-2017 STEM Enrichment Fall to Spring school year session will begin on Saturday, October 1st from 9am-12pm at Alexis I. duPont High School. The Fall to Spring session will take place two Saturdays per month, for all enrolled students (grades 7-12).
