A 12-month mentorship for girls and young women aged 13 to 20years is aimed at eradicating teenage pregnancy through sensitization and capacity building interventions. The project will integrate crochet training with leadership and internship opportunities to equip girls with critical problem solving skills for sustainable income and bodily autonomy. The project is designed to stimulate government and community response mechanism for prompt sexual and reproductive health services.
Nigeria population index reveal that about 44.5 million young women aged between 10-24 years got pregnant in 2016. This figure has increased due to the rising economic hardship. Research on health reveal that this represents the highest death index among teenagers. Unsafe abortion, poor ante-natal care, pregnancy complications, unstable family life, unprepared motherhood are all resultant consequences of teenage pregnancy. Girls who fall pregnant with minima education face increased poverty.
The Knitting Crochet Training project seeks to create a supportive environment where teenage mothers and other vulnerable young women can gain valuable skills in knitting and crocheting. These crafts offer numerous benefits including personal growth, therapeutic effects, and income generation opportunities. By providing access to this training, we aim to empower teenage mothers with the necessary tools to become independent and self-sufficient.
Vulnerable girls, particularly, teenage mothers often face multifaceted challenges, including societal stigma, economic insecurity, and limited access to educational and employment opportunities. These challenges perpetuate cycles of poverty and vulnerability, hindering the holistic development of both mothers and their children. By investing in their empowerment, we can break these cycles and foster a more inclusive and equitable society.
