Menstrual Hygiene Management in schools of Nepal

Simthali Village, Ward No. 2 of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality, Dhading District, in central Nepal, recently benefited from an initiative to promote menstrual hygiene management, supported by ECCA. In collaboration with the local women group, Simthali Aatmanirbhar Mahila Samuha, total of 378 sets of reusable, washable sanitary pads were distributed among menstruating women and girls in the community.

Alongside the sanitary pads, information leaflets in the local language and orientations through door-to-door program were provided to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene practices and empower women and girls with the knowledge for better health and well-being.

Recipients, including Mrs. Om Maya, President of the women group, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to ECCA and the local women group, noting that access to reusable sanitary pads has reduced discomfort during menstruation, enabling them to participate more conveniently in daily life and community activities.

Shree Sitadevi Secondary School is located in Sangurigadhi Rural Municipality in Dhankuta District in eastern Nepal. Collaborating closely with the school’s Child Club and local stakeholders, ECCA has worked to enhance the school environment and, importantly, to promote menstrual hygiene management by constructing girlfriendly toilets, providing orientation sessions, and distributing reusable sanitary pads.

Recently, ECCA provided 144 sets of reusable, washable sanitary pads to the Child Club representatives. Following an orientation program at the school, the Child Club distributed the pads to menstruating students and female teachers. Information leaflets in the local language accompanied the distribution, offering guidance on proper use of the reusable sanitary pads and on menstrual hygiene management.

The students shared heartfelt feedback, “We no longer feel embarrassed to ask for a pad or to talk about our period with friends or teachers. We can stay in class, do our work, and even join sports and school programs without worry.”

This openness and comfort strongly resonate with what broader programs in Nepal and beyond have shown: when girls have access to menstrual products and education.
