Helping Moana reach her potential

By Margaret Grainger | Vice President

Simple tasks are challenging.
Simple tasks are challenging.

Little Moana, her brother and mum came to stay at Hand to Hand 18 months ago. The family had fled domestic violence, alcohol and drugs. Moana's mother had consumed alcohol when she was pregnant with Moana, resulting in her being born with severe mental delays. Although she is 3 years old, Moana has the skills of a 10 month old baby both physically and mentally.

Moana is not able to communicate verbally or do simple tasks such as dressing or independently going to the toilet. She attends the hand to hand preschool; her brother goes to school and mum now has a job and she no longer drinks or takes drugs. The family lives at our Hand to Hand housing estate and their lives have changed for the better.

Unfortunately, Moana's needs are beyond what we can provide for her both at preschool and at the housing. She desperately needed a comprehensive occupational therapy program including speech therapy, physical therapy and cognitive therapy. This is very expensive and well beyond the financial ability of the foundation.

Through generous donations, Moana now receives therapy once or twice a week with professional occupational therapists. Her developmental skills have improved dramatically since receiving this treatment and she is beginning to achieve her full potential.

This therapy will be required for many years, however without it, she will not be able to reach her developmental milestones.

Thank you for your love and support. Changing one life, one day at a time.
