Over The Top - The Roof is Up
Over The Top - The Roof is Up

Who would have believed that the construction of an entire classroom and an office could be so far along in just 1 1/2 months?! This construction company should be given a trophy! When this (7th) classroom is finished by the end of the February our tiny tots will be moving into their new classroom and starting a long and pleasant journey into literacy and a bright future.

The walls are up - the roof is up - the ceiling is being put in - even the windows are in place. It is amazing what can be done when sufficient funds are provided. These classrooms are not just rooms in a building - they are the objects of bright and promising futures to the thousands of children who will be sitting in them now and for many years to come - and learning for the future.

Your donations make the difference between the vicious circle of poverty - and breaking out of it into a future of literacy, hope, strength and pride.

We are all helping underprivileged  children to learn to walk tall - and know that they have a lot to be proud of.

They are our future! They are the future parents who will make sure that their own children are educated. Your donations aren't just for now. They are helping to build a school that will last for many, many years to come.

Our 7th classroom at the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center in Nakuru, Kenya is growing and growing - and you donations are making a world of difference! Just a month ago this corner of the property was just barren land and now the roof is going up. It is truly amazing to see how quickly a sturdy construction can be built in such a short period of time if the funding is available. This classroom is scheduled to be completed by the end of February.  That means that the children having their classes in a make-shift classroom - which is more like a big shed than a classroom - can move into the new classroom and begin learning! Because half of the offices - teachers' rooms - will be completed as well, our tiny little tots will be able to begin Day Care as the classroom that served as an office until now will be renovated immediately. We will need furniture for both classrooms - and mattresses for our little ones for their afternoon naps. It is difficult to fathom the idea that little 3 - 4 year old children are hungry and sleeping on a dirt floor of a hut or shack in the slums. We are so happy to be changing this situation for 30 little boys and girls

Join us in making a difference! After this classroom is built, the 8th and last classroom of the elementary school will be built - hopefully immediately after this one is completed. But we need a lot of help from caring - sharing people who will make it happen!

HARAMBEE  is the Swahili word for "Joining hands and working together for a common goal".

Let's join hands!

...and it goes on and on..watching the schoolhouse grow

We began the construciton of the 7th classroom last weekend and it is already taking shape. It is always amazing to see the process and the progress of another classroom being constructed at the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center in Nakuru, Kenya. What could be done in a fraction of the time and energy with heavy-duty equipment, is all done - practically by hand. Under the critical eyes of our project manager, Ken, and the constructor, the hard-working men dig and dig and schlepp and schlepp away the excess dirt with their shovels and wheelbarrows until the shape of the new classroom and office are formed.

This construction phase consists of a classroom and an office as it must be built around the corner with one roof. The next construction phase will be the same from the other side with the teachers' room and principal's office - joining the two offices together so that a lovely court for morning assemblies will be found in the middle.

We have come a long way - but we still have a long way to go - but with your help we can go further much faster so that these children will one day have classrooms with an atmosphere that makes learning fun and interesting and teaching less of a job than an enjoyable way to make a difference in children's lives.

We are hoping to have the classroom and office finished by the end of February. With your support, perhaps even sooner so that the preschool children can move out of the make-shift sheetmetal roofed, wooden shack classroom into a real, comfortable and friendly classroom. Hand in Hand we'll make it happen!

Happy Holidays and a healthy, happy and successful 2018 from all of us at Live and Learn in Kenya International.

The Beautiful New Classroom
The Beautiful New Classroom

What a celebration we had as we officially opened the door to the beautiful new classroom! A group of 23 sponsors from Germany, USA and Holland visited Nakuru from October 27th to November 5th and we were able to celebrate as Loredana, one of the donors from the donating company, was able to cut the ribbons and unlock the door to the stunningly colorful classroom which was painted to match the company's logo. It was a touching moment for all involved and the tears of joy in Loredana's eyes were only to be matched by the cries of joy coming from the parents and teachers and other invited guests who all took turns flooding into the classroom.

Another classroom completed - 2 more to go! We can only hope that 2018 will be as successful as 2017 has turned out to be. So now that we have all returned home from Kenya - it's time to start working on finding ways to fund the next classroom so that we all have reason to celebrate again in October/November 2018.

We would like to start construction of the 7th classroom in April 2018, but we really have some fundraising to do!

HAND IN HAND WE'LL MAKE IT!

Education is the Key to the Future
Education is the Key to the Future

The school kitchen is nearly built and in a couple of months we hope to have it fully financed. So now it is time to begin making plans for the next classroom at the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center's elementary school. Six classrooms have been built so far, although one of them is presently being used as an office and teacher's room. The next classroom will be one of the two most expensive ones as the office must be built at the same time because it will have the same roof. The eighth classroom with be connected to the mandatory teacher's staff room and the office. So we have some very important fundraising to accomplish within the next year and a half in order to have the school construction finished so that the now 5th grade will be able to move ahead yearly from the 6th to the 7th and lastly to the 8th grade classrooms while new children will be joining the program every year so that we will have 8 classrooms filled with 30 children per classroom. Once the 8 classrooms are completed the next step will be the kindergarten tract with 3 classrooms. So, we have plenty of work to get done.

As Art Williams once said "I never said it would be easy. But it will be worth it."

Once we have 330 pupils attending our own kindergarten and school you can be sure that it will be worth it!
