Training on Food and Socio-Cultural Rights

Help Society Nepal (HS-Nepal), partner NGO of Language Development Centre Nepal was organised one day trainings on Food and Socio-Cultural Rights of Tharu communities in November 2016. We are giving focus to aware minority communities especially women through trainings, workshops, language, education and community based- development activities.

Tharu communities especially women are not able to involve in main stream development because they are not literate about their rights and facing many problems to maintain daily life because of socio-cultural-political discriminations. These discriminations link to conflict, human rights violations, underrepresentation and increase in poverty levels, lack of equal access to and quality education.

We are trying to change these situations and organized the Training on Food and Socio-Cultural Rights of Tharu Communities to twenty-two (Male: 5 Female: 17) community members in Dang. They were trained about food and socio-cultural rights and its relation to constitutional rights. This training was helped them to know constitutional provision about different rights and their roles and responsibilities.

We believe that all participants are able to convey their learning and information in their community which will be changed the people's mind mind for their creative and positive involvement in the development. One female participant said, "We are poor and backward because we never get right information in right time, but this training helped us to know about constitutional provision about our rights." They added, this kind of training needs to be organised in community level to create awareness in the whole community people and their active participation.

Key Issues: We would like to response community's expectation if we are able to generate more financial resources. We are trying to do best using our existing capacities and hopeful, we will have more financial resources to continue and expand our activities.

Training on Sustainable Development Goals

SDGs Training activities and particiapnts

Language Development Centre Nepal (LDC-Nepal) and Help Society Nepal (HS-Nepal) working together since 2008 to implement language, education and development activities. We are supporting Tharu and other minor communities in Dang to promote their heritage language and culture through multilingual education and micro community development activities.

Tharu communities are not given opportunities to participate in development processes because of socio-cultural-political discriminations. These discriminations link to conflict, human rights violations, underrepresentation and increase in poverty levels, lack of equal access to and quality education (formal and non-formal).

We are committed to change these situations and organized the Training on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to fifteen (Male: 8 Female: 7) NGO staff and members in Dang. They were trained how to facilitate training in the communities to aware them about 17 SDGs and their roles and responsibilities.

All participants are hopeful that this kind of training in the communities will be changed the mind set of people for their positive contribution in the development. They said, “These ideas are very new for us. The training helped us understand next 15 years' development agendas." Pabitra Chaudhary said, “I spent about ten years in development field and now this training is helped me to realize the importance of development agendas and its challenges in my/our life.”

Key Concerns: We are facing difficulties to address community's minimum expectations or requirements because of funding issue. We are trying to connect with potential people and foundation to generate additional financial resources and supports for our projects.

Limbu Project Update, 25 May 2016

IK Holders Meeting at Phidim, Panchthar

Language Development Centre Nepal (LDC-Nepal) is supporting Limbu communities in Panchthar to promote their heritage language and culture through multilingual education. & development activities. LDC-Nepal is assisting local primary schools to promote mother tongue education and adult literacy activities partnership with Limbu Language Development Association (LiLDA) and indigenous knowledge (IK) holders for the Limbu Communities. LDC-Nepal supports LiLDA to promote Limbu language & culture and its uses in basic education (formal and non formal).

You can find Limbu literature but these are not relevant to basic education especially for children as they are not contextual. We spent over four months in the Limbu communities to collect oral literature suitable for Limbu children. We able to collect fourteen different stories and edited them during workshops in Phidim.

All IK holders were very happy to share their oral literature to group for editing. They are hopeful, it will be published and children will benefit from their contribution. They said, “This is very new idea for them to collect the oral literature from the IK holders and edit in the group with illustrations. Bhawani Tawa (LDC-Nepal volunteer) said, “I spent about ten months meeting with Limbu IK holders and convincing them to share their oral literature. It is challenging job to choose the best stories for the children.”

We also distributed MLE Reference manual 'Multilingual Education in Nepal' and Trilingual (Limbu-Nepali-English) Limbu book to school in coordination with Panchthar District Education Office.

Key Concerns: Limbu communities and local schools continue to ask us for more support to them to enable them to use Limbu language in basic education, train the teacher how to use mother tongue as a medium of instruction at the beginning and in the transition to Nepali and English. We continue to try to generate additional resources to expand our activities with LiLDA.
