Indigenous skill develop't training to Tharu women

Language Development Centre Nepal (LDC-Nepal) and Help Society Nepal (HS-Nepal) is jointly implementing language, education and development activities in Dang since 2008. Our activities are implemented through local women led and other community groups in coordination with local government offices. We are supporting local communities to use theirheritage language and culture in basic education and helping them to promote and use their indigenous science and skills to enhance economic activities to improve their socioeconomic situation.

HS-Nepal is supporting local communities especially Tharu, Freed Kamaiyas and Kamalaris to improve their socioeconomic life through regular meetings, workshops, trainings, literacy and minor support programs with assistance from LDC-Nepal. We were able to organised following different events in last three months with 75 (Male: 40, Female: 35) participants in coordination with local stakeholders; NGOs, governments, and CSOs.

Tharu Indigenous Skill Development Training: We were able to train 15 Tharu women to enhance their indigenous skills to produce Dhakiya (especial Tharu basket) for business purpose in coordination with District Coordination Committee and Small Industries and Skill Development Office Dang. This training was run for 12 days. Training participants are committed to produce Dhakiya for sale. We are hopeful they will able to start family-based business.

Activity Review Meeting with Beneficiaries: HS-Nepal team is regular touch with local beneficiaries to know their perception and ideas and help them to put their voices strongly in stakeholders meeting. This kind of meeting is very helpful for us to make our activities more effective and fruitful. One of the beneficiary said, "We are very happy to share our concerns but the question is when and how it will be addressed."

Meetings with Stakeholders on Freed Kamaiyas and Kamalaris Issue: HS-Nepal was organised two days meeting with local stakeholders; District Coordination Committee, District Agriculture Office, District Land Revenue Office, District Women and Child Development Office, Freed Kamaiya Civil Society Network, Freed Kamaiya Women Society and Municipality's representatives as well journalists. Thirty-one participants (Male:19 Female: 12) were participants in the meeting. The main agenda of the meeting was Land and Food security of Freed Kamaiyas and Kamalaris as well their children's education.

"We are demanding for identity card for Kamaiya women from the beginning but our voices are not heard. Due to this Kamaiya Women are unable to benefitted from government supports and facilities. It is pinching us, why are we neglected?" (Mrs. Kamalapati, Free Kamaiya Women Society, Dang)

We know that language, education and development activities are more important to improve and enhance socioeconomic life of Freed Kamaiyas and Kamalaris but unfortunately we are unable to addressed their minor concerns due to lack of financial capacities. It is painful for us. However, we are moving to right direction with some ideas and small activities.

Achievements:

Tharu communities especially Freed Kamaiyas and Kamalaris are more aware and active to develop partnership with different stakeholders to meet address their expectations.
Developing positive attitudes among the key stakeholders especially local governments and development partners, voices of Freed Kamaiyas and Kamalaris are heard.
Tharu women, who were trained from Tharu Indigenous Skill Development Training they are ready to start family-based business using their skills.

Challenge: Our weak financial capacity is a key challenge to us to continue and expand the project activities. But we are hopeful and endeavouring to continue our activities with our limited resources.

International Mother Language Day Celebration 2017

Yakthung Academy Nepal (YA-Nepal) was organised International Mother Language Day February 21, 2017 (IMLD17) with financial and technical support from Language Development Centre Nepal (LDC-Nepal).

Forty-three participants were participated in the celebration of IMLD17 in Phidim. They are Limbu IK holders, local government representatives and NGO members. All are agreed to work together to promote, preserve and develop Limbu language and culture through language, education and development activities.

The IMLD17 was celebrated based on two papers (1) Multilingual Education in Nepal and International Mother Language Day 2017, Pushker Kadel, LDC-Nepal Director and (2) Limbu language in school education; Situation and Solutions, Asst. Prof Harichandra Lawati. It was very lively interaction to understand language issue in basic education.

Pushker Kadel's paper was focused "good-quality education for all is truly one of the most powerful instruments to make prosperous country through language-based early education. He added that if we able to use mother language in education, it will also give us pride, prestige and power." One of the IK holder, Sesemi Se Nalbo said, "it is true pride, prestige and power will resume if Limbu language will use as a language of instruction in education and an official language."

Harichandra Lawati's paper was raised issues about reducing numbers of Limbu speaker because new generations are not aware and encourage to use Limbu language at home. He said, "first we must have start to use Limbu language in daily conversation at home as well in community and second, create an environment to use Limbu language in school education as a language of instruction."

Commitments:

They will encourage and support the new generation to use Limbu language in daily conversation at home and community
They will support to promote and develop Limbu language in coordination with local schools, government offices and Limbu Indigenous Knowledge (IK) holders

Achievements:

One expert committee was formed with nine members to promote and develop Limbu language and culture as well indigenous skills in future.
Three national newspaper was made special news about IMLD17 celebration, which is very powerful advocacy about language and culture issue in Nepal
Limbu parents are requesting us (by telephone) for our support to introduce Limbu language as a language of instruction in local schools and literacy classes.

We were able to make effective approach to parents and IK holders for their involvement to promote their language and culture through basic education (formal and non-formal).

"The use of mother tongue in education will help to create educational, emotional, vocational and spiritual motivation among the learners." (P. Kadel, 2017) For this great cooperation and partnership is required with development partners, individuals and local government.

Challenge:

We are also facing difficulties to link with potential international donors (individuals or institutions) for their support. Due to this, we are struggling to continue and expand project activities. We are hopeful and will have good news.

Limbu Project Update February 2017

Limbu Literature Launch in Phidim

Yakthung Academy Nepal (YA-Nepal), a new partner NGO of Language Development Centre Nepal (LDC-Nepal) is agreed to work together to promote, preserve and develop Limbu language and culture through language, education and development activities. We were made commitment to prepare Limbu communities to use their heritage language and culture in basic education (formal and non-formal).

YA-Nepal is regularly interacting with local communities, Limbu writers and journalists through meetings, workshops, trainings and community-based literacy activities to promote and develop Limbu language and standardise its writing system using both Sirijanga and Devanagari script. YA-Nepal organised following different events in last three months with 80 (Male: 60, Female: 20) participants in coordination with local government.

Workshop on Limbu Language and Script issue: Local communities and Limbu writers are started to talk about scripts issues and its benefits. Malisa Yakthumba was presented paper Sirijanga Script and its uses to promote Limbu language and Lachhami Serma Papo presented his paper benefits of Devanagari script in basic education (Formal). It was effective interaction between Limbu speakers and writers why both scripts are important to preserve and promote Limbu language in future.

Poem Competition in Limbu Language: YA-Nepal was organised Limbu language poem competition remembering late Limbu writer Puspa Thamsuhang for his contribution to develop and promote Limbu language in Nepal.

Celebrated 312^th Birth Anniversary of Teangsi Sirijanga: YA-Nepal organised a Limbu literature workshop to celebrate 312^th birth anniversary of Teangsi Sirijanga. Teangsi Sirijanga was sacrificed his life for Limbu language.

We believe that to promote a Limbu language as an instruction language in basic education and develop as an official language these kinds of activities are necessary to aware local communities to use their heritage language and culture in basic education and daily conversation in the communities. Language and education (Multilingual Education-MLE) program will be effectively implemented through regular advocacy.

Achievements:

Limbu communities are more aware and active to promote their language and culture as well their linguistic human rights.
Developing positive attitudes among the Limbu speakers to use Limbu language at home with their children
Numbers of Limbu literatures are drafted and getting ready to publish as a reference reading materials for MLE activities.

We were able to forward the message and convince the Limbu communities that, "The use of mother tongue in education is one of the best ways to save our languages, identity and provide a firm foundation for quality education." (P. Kadel, 2016) We have to continue our activities in coordination with different stakeholders and great helping hands.

Challenge: We are facing difficulties to continue and expand our activities lack of financial resources but we are hopeful for good news and struggling to continue our activities with our limited resources.
