Every March, organizations across the country step up and host events to raise awareness of the vital importance of Meals on Wheels. Local leaders and members of the community have a chance to celebrate the volunteers that support these programs throughout the year and help them deliver meals. These events are collectively known as "March for Meals".
Having access to healthy food is a basic necessity at any age, but this becomes especially critical as we get older so that we can maintain our strength and recover more quickly from illnesses and injuries. But Meals on Wheels does not only provide nutritious food; with every meal, isolated elders also get a few minutes of socialization, a warm smile, and a daily wellness check - and it helps to ensure that the most vulnerable members of our society know that they are connected to a caring community.
When US Representative Ro Khanna visited us recently to help deliver Meals on Wheels to Fremont seniors, he was touched by the stories shared by the seniors he met. Asking about their lives and challenges, one person told him: "I depend on my daily meals and really like the food" and another said: "I can't cook anymore, but with Meals on Wheels, I don't have to worry about feeling hungry".
So, during the month of March we invite you all to attend a local event to experience first-hand the JOY of delivering meals to those that need them the most. Or find some time to volunteer with your local Meals on Wheels organization - it truly is a rewarding way to get involved and see for yourself how much of a difference your support makes.
Meals on Wheels and LIFE ElderCare enable seniors to stay nourished in body, mind, and spirit. They know that they are not alone, that they are part of a community that cares for their well-being. And your generous donations are what enable us to continue to provide this reassurance.
Thank you for caring for the elderly in our neighborhoods!
