“Hunger and malnutrition are on the rise in various parts of the Eastern Cape. Sadly so many children have lost their lives. Nine children died in the Butterworth hospital due to malnutrition. The good news is that malnutrition can be prevented and the effects can be reversed with good nutrition.” 13 April 2022, IOL News.
The Kusile Women Empowerment project started their soup kitchen because of the requests from the GBV clients they see as well as from the clinic patients who defaulted on their treatments due to a lack of meals in their homes.
The main aim of the soup kitchen is to enable chronic patients, victims of gender-based violence, neglected and abused children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and the poor to have at least one nutritious meal a day. Although it does not
The project leader reports: “Your donation has fed over 260 people from the Zanoxolo, Emasimini, and Cenyu Village.”

Reaching the Vulnerable
By Faith Brown | Fundraiser

Elize is the driving force!
Elize is the driving force of the Bergsig Support Group in Springbok, Northern Cape. She works tirelessly with volunteers in the community to address burning issues. One such issue is hunger. Bergsig still continues to provide baked bread as funds for ingredients become available.
In order to continue with feeding the vulnerable, their pizza baking project using their oven will continue on 25th February. The target is to sell 25 pizzas a week (100 per month) at a value of R120 each. These profits will go towards their feeding the community project.
Elize is also looking to provide an opportunity to a woman who has been a victim of Gender-based Violence (GBV) to help with the pizza baking so that she can at least put bread on her own table.
Bergsig Support Group will also partner with schools to supply the baked bread for the school feeding scheme.
Your continued support assists Elize and the Bergsig Support Group to reach the most vulnerable in this rural community.
A heartfelt thank you!

Baking Pizzas to Lend a Hand

![At least a bread a day]()
At least a bread a day
The Bergsig Support Group in Springbok Northern Cape still continues to use their oven to provide baked bread to those who are unemployed and hungry, even though funds are limited.
‘As many as 10 million adults and nearly three million children experienced hunger in the past week in South Africa in 2021, and 2.5 million adults and 600,000 children were experiencing perpetual hunger, hunger every day or almost every day. (26 May 2021) https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-26-food-crisis-2-5-million-south-africans-experience-hunger-every-day/
Not much has changed since then, people still go hungry every day. The funds received allow rural communities like the one in Springbok, especially children and the aged can go to bed with a meal.
Bergsig has now started with its income generation project. The past weekend they will be sold 65 pizzas to generate an income, in order to bake bread to supply to the needy in the community. Their target is to sell at least 100 pizzas per month, and this income will buy ingredients to bake bread and provide it to those who need it in their community.
Thank you for your continued support!
