Spring is in the air at YoungArts with many activities blooming! This year’s 45 Gold and Silver Award winners will soon gather in New York City for a week of intense training workshops, master classes and an interdisciplinary performance celebrating their achievements. 'In the Studio' Week begins April 17 with a benefit performance on April 22. This year, we are pleased to feature esteemed Master Teachers including Melissa Manchester, Gregory Mosher and Mathew Rushing. The new YoungArts Miami regional program gets underway with one full day of the YoungArts experience for South Florida’s winners on Lincoln Road, South Beach on March 21 and monthly vignette performances at the Bass Museum throughout the spring season. Most importantly, Monday marks the opening of the early registration period for YoungArts Week 2011. 17 and 18 year old artists across America will begin to apply for the experience of a lifetime. GlobalGiving has offered to match every donation that comes in on Tuesday, March 16 with a 30% bonus. This means that your $20 gift can sponsor an application fee for one of the young aspiring artists who apply to our program. Application fees increase to $35 on June 1 and the registration period is open until October 15. Bonuses are for gifts up to $1,000 per donation. YoungArts Week Finalists Announced: Selected from thousands of applicants in nine arts disciplines, one hundred forty-two (142) of the nation’s most talented young artists were invited to Miami for YoungArts Week, an all-expense paid, week-long gathering that includes master classes, workshops, readings, exhibitions and performances. After the finalists were selected, YoungArts staff were quickly on the phones to personally call the finalists and give them the good news—that they were coming to Miami for YoungArts Week in January, 2010! (See video link below). YoungArts Week – January 11-16, 2010: Excitement filled the streets of Miami when 142 of the nation’s most talented young artists came together for YoungArts Week 2010! The event kicked off on January 12, 2010, with specialized workshops conducted by leaders in their fields and master classes by world renown artists, such as Liv Ullmann in Theater and Desmond Richardson in Dance (See Video links below). During the evenings, the Miami community came out for free performances by YoungArts finalists in Voice, Jazz, Theater, Dance and Cinematic Arts. YoungArts Writers’ Readings and an exhibition of eclectic artworks by the YoungArts finalists in Visual Arts and Photography were also held in Miami’s popular Design District. YoungArts Week concluded on January 16, with a Chamber Music performance by the YoungArts finalists in Music at the University of Miami.

Approximately 6,000-8,000 students register for YoungArts each year, and last month our office was hard at work processing the thousands of applications that came through our doors for YoungArts Week 2010. Throughout the past week the YoungArts office has been bustling with activity and excitement as the annual adjudication process has commenced. This purely anonymous process where all identifying information is removed from application materials ensures the most exceptionally talented students are selected. The adjudication experience provides our distinguished group of panelists with an amazing opportunity to see, hear and read the artwork of so many talented students.
Our impressive panel of judges consists of over 60 experts in their respective fields, representing nine artistic disciplines in the visual, literary and performing arts: Cinematic Arts, Photography, Visual Arts, Dance, Theater, Writing, Voice, Jazz and Music. Our panelists have the very difficult task of selecting up to 150 students as YoungArts Finalists.
Each panelist evaluates all participants within their respective YoungArts discipline to choose the finalists. The week long process begins with a panel of preliminary judges who narrow down the large pool of applicants to those with the highest scores for the national adjudicators to choose the finalists. Each application is carefully evaluated and given a score between 1 and 10. Ten represents finalists invited to Miami, nine represents Honorable Mention award recipients and eight represents Merit award recipients.
Once the process is complete and just before the Thanksgiving holiday, YoungArts staff has the exciting task of calling each of the 150 finalists and notifying them of their invitation to YoungArts Week 2010. The finalists are officially announced in early December.
Only two months later, the most talented 17 and 18 year olds in the country will be welcomed to Miami for YoungArts Week, an all-expense-paid week of master classes, showcase performances, exhibitions, enrichment programs, and final adjudications with awards up to $10,000 to continue their craft.

YoungArts Alumni Take a look at what some of our YoungArts Alumni are up to these days:
Tarell Alvin McCraney, 1999 YoungArts winner in Theater (Merit): While studying at the Yale School of Drama, McCraney developed a trilogy of plays that are now being performed for this first time in their entirety in New York at the Public Theater. His plays have been performed all over the world in New Haven, Atlanta , Dublin and London.
Chad Rehmann, 1999 YoungArts winner in Music Composition (Level I): Chad recently collaborated with composer Andres Boulton to provide music for the upcoming ABC Original Movie, “The Dog Who Saved Christmas”. This holiday film, starring Mario Lopez, Dean Cain, and Adrienne Barbeau will premiere on Sunday, November 29th, at 8:00 pm, on the ABC Family Channel as part its annual “Countdown to 25 Days of Christmas” event.
Lindsey Maxon, 2009 YoungArts winner in Writing/Creative Non-fiction (Level III): Lindsey is currently attending the University of Texas and has recently received an honor from Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for the Best Teen Writing of 2009 for her Science Fiction short story. In addition, she had an article published in the MENSA bulletin.
Marie Fuchs, 2009 YoungArts winner in Visual Arts(Level II): Marie is currently attending the California Institute of the Arts and has recently received many exciting honors. She was awarded First Prize from the VSA ARTS in the amount of $10,000. In addition, through Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, she received a Gold Award for her portfolio and a Silver Award for her individual work of art.

National Arts and Humanities Month (NAHM) is a coast-to-coast collective celebration of culture in America. Held every October and coordinated by Americans for the Arts, it has become the largest annual celebration of the arts and humanities in the nation. YoungArts is celebrating Arts and Humanities month by helping emerging young artists from all over the country process their applications for YoungArts Week 2010. Thousands of applications will come through our downtown Miami offices this month to meet the October 23 application deadline. We also will be receiving all portfolios and audition materials which are due on October 30. Over the past 28 years, YoungArts has received over 160,000 applications from artists in the visual, literary and performing arts. As the sole nominating agency for Presidential Scholars in the Arts, YoungArts has also seen close to 600 of its applicants receive this high honor. Rafael Moras, 2006 YoungArts winner in Voice/Tenor and Presidential Scholar in the Arts: Now winner of 51st Metropolitan Opera Southwest Region auditions. In March he will head to NYC to work with Met voice coaches and compete at the Met on March 15 for the Grand Finale.
Courtney Fortune, 2007 YoungArts winner in Popular Voice (Honorable Mention): Just released her CD, Spark Love; won the Brian Wilson Scholarship Award; and was featured in Glamour Magazine as “The Vocalist” in the 2009 Top 10 College Women list.
Garrett Smith, 2007 YoungArts winner in Dance/Jazz and Presidential Scholar in the Arts: An apprentice with the Houston Ballet and just received a Fellowship Grant from the New York Choreographic Institute to support the development of a new choreography by the dance maker, in a studio setting.
Antonio Campos, 2002 YoungArts winner in Film & Video and Presidential Scholar in the Arts: Directed a feature film, AFTERSCHOOL, which is being released on October 2nd in New York City through IFC Films. It premiered in Cannes, was played at the New York Film Festival and in Berlin and was nominated for two Gotham Awards and one Indie Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
Dear YoungArts Friends, We wanted to share some very exciting news about what's happening here at YoungArts! YoungArts has been selected as the charity partner by FOX for the premiere of their new TV show GLEE. The gift will support our YoungArts voice artists. GLEE is a new comedy series about an optimistic teacher who attempts to save McKinley High's Glee Club from obscurity while helping a group of aspiring underdogs realize their true star potential. Guest stars set to appear on the series' freshman season include Kristin Chenoweth, Victor Garber, Eve and YoungArts Alumnus (1999), Josh Groban (who will appear on the September 16 show). GLEE premieres Wednesday, Sept. 9 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
