The National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of Indonesia continues to demonstrate its commitment to assisting flood survivors in West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh. As of February 5, 2026, a total of 142,079 beneficiaries have directly received humanitarian aid distributed during the emergency response phase and into the recovery phase.
This figure represents the cumulative total of various emergency services provided by BAZNAS RI and continues to rise as data collection and distribution efforts continue. The aid distributed includes the provision of food through public kitchens, the establishment of clean water stations, health services, and psychosocial support for affected communities.
Saidah Sakwan, MA, Head of the Distribution and Utilization Division at BAZNAS RI, stated that BAZNAS RI is committed to ensuring that disaster survivors in Sumatra and Aceh receive swift, appropriate, and sustainable assistance.
“As of early February, a total of 142,079 people have directly benefited from the aid distributed by BAZNAS,” she said.
In Aceh Province, BAZNAS has reached 62,347 beneficiaries spread across 11 regencies/cities and 40 subdistricts. The aid has focused on setting up 26 public kitchens, distributing 2,488 family relief packages, providing healthcare services to 684 patients, constructing emergency mosques and temporary sanitation facilities, and meeting other basic needs of residents affected by floods and landslides.
Meanwhile, in North Sumatra, aid was distributed to 37,960 beneficiaries across 9 regencies/cities and 32 subdistricts. Services included the distribution of 1,769 ready-to-eat meals, free medical treatment for 1,769 patients, the construction of emergency mosques and temporary sanitation facilities, the provision of clean water, as well as the distribution of medicines and hygiene kits at evacuation sites and in directly affected areas.
In West Sumatra, the number of beneficiaries reached 41,772 people spread across 11 regencies/cities and 44 subdistricts. BAZNAS operated public kitchens, distributing 16,945 portions of ready-to-eat meals daily, delivering 3,500 family relief packages, and providing health services and psychosocial support to aid the community’s post-disaster recovery.
“That is what we did during the emergency response phase in collaboration with regional BAZNAS offices, humanitarian partners, and local governments,” he said.
As the recovery phase begins, BAZNAS RI is also implementing strategic programs such as “Back to the Mosque,” “Back to School,” and the construction of permanent housing for flood victims in those three provinces.
“What we’re doing is restoring mosques in the disaster-affected areas—not just rebuilding them, but also providing the necessary prayer equipment. We’re also distributing 30,000 school uniforms, including shoes, backpacks, and books—we’re preparing everything so that children can exercise their right to resume their education properly,” said Saidah.
Currently, the construction of permanent housing is underway in North Sumatra as part of a long-term effort to assist communities who lost their homes due to the floods in late November 2025.
“Alhamdulillah, BAZNAS will build 120 permanent housing units in South Tapanuli, and the groundbreaking ceremony has already been held there by BAZNAS RI and the South Tapanuli Regency Government,” explained Saidah in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, on Monday (February 16, 2026).
To support this recovery process, BAZNAS RI has allocated Rp80 billion in aid funds, which were entrusted by the Indonesian public through zakat, infaq, and sadaqah.
“The groundbreaking for the temporary housing units in North Sumatra has already taken place; insha’Allah, the next ones will be in Aceh Tamiang and West Sumatra. We plan to build the ‘Kampung Cahaya Zakat’ (Zakat Light Village), so there will be housing, a mosque, and a market that will serve as its economic hub,” said Saidah.
BAZNAS RI encourages the public to continue participating in helping disaster victims through zakat, infak, and sedekah. Public support is the main driving force in expanding the reach of aid and ensuring that survivors can recover more quickly and with dignity.
