On January 5, 2026, the National Zakat Agency of Indonesia (BAZNAS RI) officially launched the “Back to School with BAZNAS” program, targeting 500 disaster-affected locations across Indonesia. The initiative aims to help children from vulnerable and disaster-impacted communities return to school by providing essential educational assistance following floods, landslides, and other recent natural disasters.
BAZNAS prepared and began distributing approximately 20,000 school supply packages across 500 disaster-affected locations in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra. Each package includes essential learning items such as school bags, shoes, uniforms, and basic educational supplies. Distribution is conducted in stages based on student population size, school damage levels, and field assessment results, with priority given to the most affected communities.
As part of the initial implementation in West Sumatra, BAZNAS delivered school assistance to four affected educational institutions: MTs Harakatul Quran Padang, MTs/MA PPMTI Batang Kabung, SMA Muhammadiyah Palembayan, and MAN 1 Agam. These schools were selected due to the significant impact of flooding and landslides, which damaged facilities and caused many students to lose their school equipment.
In addition to education support, BAZNAS also implemented broader disaster response efforts, including the distribution of 30,000 sarongs and prayer garments, 30,000 Qur’an copies, and other religious and social aid across affected communities in 500 locations. This integrated approach supports both educational recovery and community resilience during the transition from emergency response to rehabilitation.
Looking ahead, the program includes plans for school facility revitalization and teacher support initiatives, strengthening long-term educational recovery in disaster-impacted regions. Through this initiative, BAZNAS seeks to reduce the risk of learning disruption, prevent student dropout, and ensure that children in crisis-affected areas can continue their education.
