Climate Resilience Through Safe Water Access in Rural Andhra Pradesh, India
Bridgit Water Foundation's safe, clean water wells are providing a vital source of climate resilience for Dalit families living in rural villages across Andhra Pradesh. Climate change has intensified recurring droughts, prolonged heat waves, and increasingly erratic monsoon rainfall, placing severe pressure on traditional water sources and groundwater supplies. These conditions often force marginalized communities to travel long distances in search of water or rely on unsafe sources that pose serious health risks. By restoring non-functional borewells and constructing new community water systems, Bridgit Water Foundation helps ensure that Dalit villages have reliable access to clean drinking water throughout the year. The time saved collecting water enables children to attend school more consistently, allows women to pursue income-generating activities, and helps families better withstand the economic hardships associated with prolonged dry periods.
The Foundation's water projects also strengthen the long-term resilience and dignity of communities that have historically experienced social exclusion and limited access to essential services. Reliable water supplies improve sanitation, reduce the spread of waterborne diseases, and provide schools, community centers, and health facilities with the water needed to remain operational during periods of drought. Local Water User Committees receive training in system management, routine maintenance, and financial stewardship, ensuring that each borewell remains a sustainable community asset for years to come. By combining reliable groundwater access with community ownership and capacity building, Bridgit Water Foundation is helping Dalit villages adapt to the challenges of a changing climate while improving health, educational opportunity, livelihoods, and hope for future generations.
