Ninety-eight percent of people in Liberia cook over open fire using large amounts of wood or on coal pots using charcoal. Village Improvement Project, Inc. is stepping in to help change this scenario by allowing people to buy and use affordable cleaner, more efficient cookstoves, which use less fuel and produce fewer toxic emissions.
The rocket stoves that VIP plans to provide will help save lives and improve health. Women and children won't have to collect large quantities of wood or cook for long hours in smoke-filled environments. It will also help reduce risks of burn, reduce injury and possible sexual violence to women and girls who have to collect wood, and cut emissions of household air pollution.
Currently, VIP is launching its improved cookstoves project with a goal to pilot the technology in five villages by the summer of 2016 to determine the interest of villagers in adopting the technology. Prior to field testing, we have done some home testing both here in the U.S. and in Liberia with two families. Photos of some of these home tests are included in this report.
