Agastya Foundation successfully organized a vibrant one-day Science Fair, "Agastya Bharat Sangam," in Srinagar on July 6th 2024, last year, marking the 25th anniversary of Agastya's impactful journey. The event was a culmination of meticulous preparations undertaken by our dedicated team, who arrived 4-5 days prior. This included securing necessary permissions from the Education Department, identifying a suitable school venue, extending invitations to esteemed guests, and, crucially, training 60 enthusiastic students to eloquently explain engaging science models to the visiting dignitaries.
The Science Fair witnessed an encouraging turnout and provided a platform for these young instructors to showcase their understanding and passion for science. Dignitaries who graced the occasion included Agastya's Chairperson, Shri Ramji Raghavan, Army Major Mr. Srinivasa Rao, and local educator Ms. Kritika Singh. Their presence significantly boosted the morale of the students and highlighted the importance of science education in the region.
This event also marked the establishment of a new Agastya Science Centre in Srinagar, a significant step towards fostering a culture of hands-on learning. We successfully onboarded a talented "Ignator" to lead the centre, selected from a large pool of promising applicants.
While we had initially sought permission for regular science sessions in schools, the Director of Srinagar's Education Department, while supportive, approved two-day Science Fairs, Teacher Training Programs (TTP), and other impactful programs, including community visits. We are enthusiastic about leveraging these approved avenues to reach a wider audience and continue our mission of making science accessible and engaging for children in Srinagar. The Agastya Bharat Sangam was a resounding success, laying a strong foundation for future science engagement and demonstrating the immense potential of young minds when provided with the right opportunities.
Following the successful Srinagar Science Fair, Agastya Foundation extended its outreach to Jammu, organising two Science Fairs on July 29th and 31st.
The first fair, held on July 29th at Govt Sr. Secondary School, Domana, saw the Agastya team training 60 students from July 25th to explain 30 science models. The event was graced by Ms. Monika Bhandari, JKAS, Chief Account Officer of the Directorate of Education, and Ms. Manisha, Joint Director, who commended Agastya's efforts. The event also received press coverage.
On July 31st, the second Science Fair took place at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School, Ambaphalla, Jammu. Shri Sunit Kumar, General Manager and Divisional Head of J&K Bank, along with AGM Shri Arjun Singh Rathore, visited and appreciated the students' presentations.
These events have presented new opportunities for Agastya. Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School in Srinagar, with its substantial student population (over 800 in classes 9-10) and proximity to other schools, is being considered for the establishment of a new Agastya lab. Furthermore, J&K Bank has expressed interest in supporting a Mobile Science Lab in Jammu, with ongoing discussions with their General Manager and DGM. These developments signify a promising expansion of Agastya's science education initiatives in the Jammu and Kashmir region.
