User Experience session!
User Experience session!

A lot has happened in Ideas en Acción lately! Today we will to tell you more about MenTe en Acción program and network.

We held our 2nd edition of MenTe en Acción in Limón, -Costa Rica´s caribbean coast- where we got to meet 36 spectacular young women who graduated from our program last May. We have now begun our 3rd edition of MenTe en Acción with over 40 young women from different areas in four of our provinces: San José, Heredia, Puntarenas, and Limón.

In our sessions they have received training in women empowerment, leadership and other soft skills, but they are also becoming women in tech, by learning about new technologies, such as 3D printing, drones, and virtual reality and beginning to experiment with programming through AppInventor -MIT´s programming tool-.

Our sessions have been very enriching, the last one being on User Experience where the girls began developing the concept for their social or environmental apps. We also had the chance to have a call with some Costa Rican and Colombian engineers who are currently working at Google! This gave the participants a wonderful opportunity to ask questions about their careers, trajectories, etc.

The particiants of this 3rd edition will graduate on October 1st, and we will keep working very hard to support the inclusion of more women in technology in the country through collaborative innovation and their involvement in more of our ongoing MenTe Network opportunities.

As part of our events for our MenTe Network (Red MenTe for women in science & technology), we co-hosted an event called “Ticas en el espacio” which translates into “Costa Rican Women in Space”. We co-organized the event with CITEC, ACAE and CFIA, wonderful organizations that believe in the power of having more women in the STEM fields. We had women engineers with impressive backgrounds sharing their stories and experiences, and a very young audience listening to their ideas and advice. Part of this audience was our current and former program participants, we had the wonderful opportunity of having women from the 1st and 3ed edition of MenTe en Acción meet and share their stories!

One example of an exciting story is Camila´s, one participant from our MenTe en Acción 1st edition and her experience in the Google Computer Science Summer Institute here.

Stay tuned for more updates in Ideas en Acción´s journey of creating social impact through collaborative innovation!

Our very successful visit to TEC in Limon!
Our very successful visit to TEC in Limon!

[Español abajo]

We are preparing for the next edition of MenTe en Acción! This time we are going to the beautiful province of Limon, where, besides of the amazing beaches, rich culture and delicious food only a 7% of the population graduates from the university. Although from this percentage 63% are women, they choose to study careers that are not in the area of science and technology. Therefore, this province was chosen to promote the integration of women in these areas.

Last January 26, we did a short but very enriching visit to Limon. We visited the places where this edition will take place. One of them is the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (ITCR), which was established in 2014. Despite its recent opening, this campus has suitable facilities for the development of students, such as laboratories for natural science and IT.  There the director of the campus, showed us the facilities and gave us some important statistical information related to the current students.

We also visited the American Corner, established more than 9 years ago, which is located in the Public Library Thomas Lynch. These facilities are extensive and complete, which give us a good place to do activities. There, we were attended by Mrs. Heremelinda, and she commented us about the current activities of the Center, such as English classes, storytelling and appreciation of reading, among others.

Finally, we had the opportunity to reconnect with former participants of MenTe en Acción, who were very excited to find out that the next edition will take place in Limon, and they were quick to offer collaboration in the next editions. We find the girls very well. It was encouraging to see that the program inspired them and bring them the desire of improve every day.

In other trips we have also met inspiring and capable girls in different schools in the area, such as the CTP of Guácimo and Limón, and the Liceo of Pacuare and Liceo Acádemico of Cariari.

We are very excited about this edition and we will still work very hard so the program will be a complete success.

Graduation night for MenTe en Accion!
Graduation night for MenTe en Accion!

[ENGLISH below]

These have been a few exciting months with Ideas en Acción taking our projects to the next level with the support given through our first campaign.

We finished our fist edition for the MenTe en Acción program to involve more young women in the STEM field. Even though the 12-week program is over, our follow up with them has shown the compromise and genuine interest they gained in these fields as a result of the program. Here are some of the follow up activities and results:

  1. 5 MenTes assisted Campus Party Costa Rica and one of them won the Iron Geek competition!
  2. A team of 4 MenTes participated and won the Hardwarethon national competition!
  3. Over 28 participants have assisted follow up trainning in robotics.
  4. 2 MenTes received a scholarship to attend the Grace Hopper Conference representing Costa Rica.
  5. One of our MenTes was selected to represent Latin America at the  Mars Desert Research Station en Utah.

These are just a few of the accomplishments of these inspiring young women that were part of our pilot program Now we're taking our edition of the program to Limón for its first edition in a rural area. We will do this with the support of the USA Embassy. Additionally we are having conversations to take the program to Monterrey, Mexico. Exciting collaborations without a doubt!

Impulsando emprendedores, our program focused on supporting entrepreneurs through mentorships with IBM is about to begin with the second edition, mixing entreprenuers in diferent development phases and topics to bring them to the next level.

With Duolingo en Acción, we're proud to say we are also continuing to take English learning through technology, to the next level in Costa Rica. We are preparing to begin our work in a Technical School in Santa Ana, as well as starting our project with the beneficiaries of Lifting Hands, an organization that works with children with after school tutoring.

We are more than excited about everything that is coming up. We really want to thank EVERYONE that has supported us, as a volunteer or through a donation. Thank you for supporting collaborative innovation through Ideas en Acción!
