Learning becomes stronger in focused groups

The HRD conducted the following activities during the report period as a part of its mission to support and build resources in the field of rehabilitation

One day visit to Madurai to work out a plan of support for the Shine School in assessment, programs plan and capacity building for its teachers. Vidya Sagar will support the organization through its community based rehabilitation program

A three day Continuous rehabilitation education program for practising special educators and therapist on Augmentative and Alternative communication for children with Cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities as conducted with the certification of the rehabilitation council of India. 28 professionals from various part of Tamil nadu and Kerala attended the training. Some staff of Vidya Sagar also participated in the training.

A three day training on Early Intervention and an assessment camp was conducted in various in the town of tiruchy and a neary by village. This was done to facilitate the setting up of Early intervention centre in the village. 8 community workers including parents of children with disabilities attended the training.

The department is also working at creating a training curriculum for a parent program titled “Demystifying therapy for young children with CP” with the therapy department

HRD is conducting a study on the I count training conducted in the month of May,. A study paper will brought out.

A training program on “ Working with Persons with CP” was conducted for staff and care givers of Balavihar training institute. This was a two day practical Workshop that addressed learning, communication, positioning, transfers, mobility and feeding and activities of daily living.

New Initiative and Activities by HRD during April to June 2017

The activities of the HRD for the reporting period were in tune with the responsibilities of the department- to build and nurture a cadre of rehabilitation professionals, design and conduct technical training programs to address a specific need of the persons with disabilities.

The Department worked actively with the Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University to start a Bachelor level Special Education Program in Special Education with Multiple disabilities as specialization.

Vidya Sagar offers low vision rehabilitation services for infants and children with visual impairment and additional disabilities (MDVI). In order to enhance services for such infants and children, the HRD with the Vision Centre of Vidya Sagar and the Chetana Charitable Trust, Chennai conducted a three days I Count workshop titled “Supporting Vision in Infants and Children with Visual Impairment and Additional disabilities”.

Fourteen professionals from seven major eye hospitals and special schools that were interested in offering rehabilitation services to children with MDVI were invited for the training. The training group was a multidisciplinary group and consisted of ophthalmologist, optometrist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, special educators and developmental psychologist. They were trained in the used of Tools and Assessment protocols followed in the Vision Centre of Vidya Sagar. The trainees worked in groups and were able to share and learn from each others’ expertise.

The organizations were expected to conduct a set number of assessments and send in the report to the training organization. The HRD also followed up on the work of the trainee organization.

The HRD worked actively to recruit Special Educators through networking with other Training Institutes for the forth coming academic year. Orientation program for the Special Educators was also conducted by the HRD.

Reporting Period- January-March 2017

The Human Resource Development Department of Vidya Sagar focuses on building and nurturing a cadre of skilled Rehabilitation professionals, enhancing the professional capacity of the existing rehabilitation professionals, addressing specific needs of persons with disability or the family, building and supporting a community of volunteers, personal assistants, caregivers and other support services, acting as a technical resource for other organizations seeking technical support. This is done by designing, developing and conducting and participating in various training programs and through Internship.

The activities carried out during the reporting period focused on language development for children and strengthening the capacities of the teachers and special educators.

Four staff members from Vidya Sagar - Ms. Kalpana, Principal and Head of Alternative and Augmentative Communication; Ms. K.S. Uma, Project Coordinator, HRD; Ms. Saritha, Occupational therapist and Ms. C. Sujatha, Special Educator attended a one week course at IIT, Chennai on "creating solutions for persons with disabilities in minutes".

A week long course on Language Development for Children with Multiple disabilities was conducted from the 6^th to the 10^th of March 2017. Eight organizations from various parts of the country and the staff of Vidya sagar took part in the training. Two senior professionals Ms. Sheela Sinha, Former Educational Director, Hellen Keller Institute Mumbai and Ms. Dipti Karnard, Training coordinator of Clarkes school and the staff of Vidya Sagar conducted the training. 19 professionals attended the training. This training was granted the status of a “Continuous Rehab Education Training” by the Rehabilitation Council of India.

A two days training on Alternative and Augmentative Communication and Autism was conducted at Mumbai by Ms. K.S. Uma , co-ordinator , HRD , and Ms. Kalpana Rao Principal and Head of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) for professionals and parents on the invitation of ‘Together ‘, a parent initiative for young adults with autism – March 11^th and 12th

A training program was conducted for school teachers and special educators working in and around Tambaram, a town in the out skirts of the Chennai city, as a part of community resource building to support the second Early Intervention Centre of Vidya Sagar located at Tambaram.
