New Initiative and Activities by HRD during April to June 2017
The activities of the HRD for the reporting period were in tune with the responsibilities of the department- to build and nurture a cadre of rehabilitation professionals, design and conduct technical training programs to address a specific need of the persons with disabilities.
The Department worked actively with the Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University to start a Bachelor level Special Education Program in Special Education with Multiple disabilities as specialization.
Vidya Sagar offers low vision rehabilitation services for infants and children with visual impairment and additional disabilities (MDVI). In order to enhance services for such infants and children, the HRD with the Vision Centre of Vidya Sagar and the Chetana Charitable Trust, Chennai conducted a three days I Count workshop titled “Supporting Vision in Infants and Children with Visual Impairment and Additional disabilities”.
Fourteen professionals from seven major eye hospitals and special schools that were interested in offering rehabilitation services to children with MDVI were invited for the training. The training group was a multidisciplinary group and consisted of ophthalmologist, optometrist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, special educators and developmental psychologist. They were trained in the used of Tools and Assessment protocols followed in the Vision Centre of Vidya Sagar. The trainees worked in groups and were able to share and learn from each others’ expertise.
The organizations were expected to conduct a set number of assessments and send in the report to the training organization. The HRD also followed up on the work of the trainee organization.
The HRD worked actively to recruit Special Educators through networking with other Training Institutes for the forth coming academic year. Orientation program for the Special Educators was also conducted by the HRD.
