The Human Resource Development Department of Vidya Sagar works towards Enhancement of Rehabilitation Services for Persons with Disabilities by Designing, Developing and Conducting various training programs and through Internship.
During the month of June , Vidya Sagar acting as a center for conducting exams of the Madras University, completed the theory examination PG Diploma in special education, Multiple Disabilities. Thirteen students took up the examinations. The students then were placed in classrooms and the various therapy departments as a part of their three months internship.
The teacher trainees were mentored by the senior teachers and the coordinator to build their capacities in hands on intervention. The trainees were assessed, feedback was given and were given opportunities to do better. The trainees had a chance to work with cross disabilities across ages and across settings. They also interned in inclusive mainstream schools and went into the community as a part of their community based rehab training.
All students cleared the University examination with a first class and four of them had scored distinction,
Eight students doing their Masters degree in Education from the St. Christopher’s College of Education did a one week internship with Vidya Sagar as a part of their course work on Inclusive education. This was to understand learning issues of children with disabilities and intervention strategies. The week was designed to give them a perspective to disabilities, understanding disabilities and the learning and communication. The students worked hands on in classes under the guidance of the class teachers.
Five students doing the Bachelors in special education from Dr.MGR Janaki College interned for two weeks to gain knowledge on cross disabilities. They were placed in various classrooms and mentored as they did their teaching practice.
The HRD working along with the therapy department brought out a feeding pamphlet for parents in English and also translated it in Tamil.
A training material for CBR workers on the same topic was also developed.
The department coordinated a training on strategies for addressing learning issues. This was conducted by 5 staff members who attended a 5 day training for the rest of the staff.
A training for the Government teachers on Curriculum modification for Children with Autism was conducted by staff of Vidya Sagar at Erode
A training on Inclusive education for mainstream teachers was conducted at Tirunelveli
