HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT of Vidya Sagar is a training and research center on Disability and Rehabilitation focusing on creating skilled professionals through the B.ED. course in multiple disabilities as mandated by the Rehabilitation Council of India replacing the PG.DIPLOMA in Special Education - Physical and Neurological, run since 1990. There is lack of adequate trained professionals with appropriate technical knowledge, understanding of development issues & human right perspective to disability to reach out the services to pwd specially in the rural areas. In smaller towns and rural areas there are limitations in terms of opportunities to update rehabilitation skills by the professionals, community workers & caregivers.Focusing on research related to disability is an urgent need.Disability sector cannot work in isolation.
Apart from running the courses recommended by RCI, Vidya Sagar with strong technical expertise has been conducting short term (need based) training in specific topics such as AAC, EI, Inclusive Education and low vision and workshops/orientations for parents,teachers,interns from other institutes. We propose to design curriculam and work towards the certification of courses for community workers and personal assistants and also for the 3 months course for practising councelors run since 2012.
Qualified professionals to provide quality rehabilitation services will increase and they may spread new initiatives Increase of number of community workers will help in providing sustained services. Training and awareness programs for various sections of the community will result in a more sensitive and inclusive community.
