This is our final report for this project.
While I read all the names of those who have donated to build the playground, I realise I know only a few of you. Thank you to all our friends for being supportive, as always. Thank you to all of you who have donated without knowing us personally for your trust, generosity, and belief in the impact of this project.
We started at the beginning of the Pandemic, and after many ups and downs, finally, now, we see the first children play and use the equipment we have provided with your donations. There was only a patch of grass; today, the attractive playground, the shady kiosk, and the colourful mosaic offer a reason to be happy to the children in the hospital’s care. The playground space is just outside the Covid-19 Pediatric ward, and therefore it was inaccessible until recently. Now that spring is around the corner; we are sure that many children will enjoy this magic space for years to come.
Thank you for giving each child who needs and will need to be hospitalised at the PAGNI the opportunity to heal in a beautiful environment.
As we close this page, we don’t want to lose you! Please stay in touch by signing in to our newsletter on our website (we promise they are few, short and sweet and no spam!). Please also consider our other projects on GlobalGiving and share them with your contacts.
We would love to thank you all individually and in person, but as it is not possible, we send you all our very best wishes for peace and health,
The playground that we so much wanted to make for our children is ready thanks to all of you who helped!
The children in the care of the University Hospital of Crete finally have their space to play together and improve their health and spirit.
Generally, today’s children are overwhelmed with an abundance of mental activities, online and on mobile phones, but have fewer opportunities to enjoy outside play with other children. Playgrounds are essential safe spaces where children can be themselves and express their fun-loving nature while developing crucial cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills.
Children that must spend long periods of time in the hospital are even more isolated and the Covid -19 pandemic has exarcebated these feelings of isolation and lonelyness
Recent studies demonstrate that greater physical activity and movement levels in children and youth are associated with the following outcomes: higher health-related quality of life; improved cardiovascular health, bone health, immune function, and indices of adiposity; cognitive development; and academic achievement. Notably, physical activity is known to promote healthy brain development and to be effective for preventing and treating both mental health conditions (i.e., anxiety and depression) and brain-based disorders in children.
We are still going through the Covid-19 Pandemic emergency but fortunately the children in the care of the Pediatric department have already access to the swings, slide and equipment as well as the beautiful and colorful mosaic made by the friends fo Crete For Life.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for making this project a reality!
Crete For Life is very happy that the delightful playground dedicated to the children of the Paediatric ward of the University Hospital in Crete is finally in place. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the construction has taken much, much longer than expected, but we are finally there!
The next report will be, hopefully, our last one on this project, showing you the whole outside area repainted and spruced up. The playground will help the children have a more positive experience while in the hospital. We very much hope that soon children and their families will be able to use the playground area which is still off limits because of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
We were only able to do it because of your generosity and support! Thank you!
Dear Friend of Crete For Life,
While the effects of the pandemic have protracted our project, we have slowly continued to make progress in the building of the playground you supported. Weeks have turned into months but the day we will be able to send you photos of children playing is, hopefully, not far off!
The University hospital of Crete serves as a main centre for Covid-19 patients on the island, for both adults and children. Access, for patients, families and also workers, has therefore been very limited during these past months. Luckily there is a decrease of cases in Crete, and we trust that soon the hospital will be able to allow contractors on its grounds. This will allow us to finish the last details in the playground area and the garden surrounding it. Here is a photo of the playground today.
Thank you for your support!
With all the delays and complications the Covid-19 pandemic is carrying, we are truly excited to tell you that we are very close to the completion of the playground and the installation of the mosaic.
Thanks to your generosity and to the hard work of our volunteers, we are now digging and preparing the area and we hope the playground will be up and running in about one month.
We cannot wait to show you the happy faces of the children who will benefit and find in the playground many happy moments during their time at the hospital. We will keep you posted, of course!
