In the space of a generation, the world has made incredible progress for children but this progress has not been spread equally or fairly. Millions of children around the world continue to miss out on education, die from preventable causes or experience violence and abuse, simply because of who they are or where they live. Over the years, our solidarity projects have reached hundreds of children and young adults from Belarus to Iraq.
In addition to poverty, many children are growing up with consequences of man-made disasters or congenital and chronic diseases. Moreover, as a result of war, 1 in 5 children worldwide faces conflict or displacement today, more at risk of harm than any time in the past 20 years. This year, 1 out of every 8 children around the world won't start school. Yet, education is the key to the future for those affected by years of hardship and trauma.
We tailor our support to each individual child, aiming to meet his or her specific needs: food, education, housing, well-being, by working closely with the child and his/her immediate family or guardian, as well as professionals such as teachers, doctors and social workers. Since 2006 over two hundred children and teenagers from the Chernobyl affected areas of Belarus, Palestine territories, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Greece, have been hosted or have been assisted by one of our many projects.
There is evidence that care and quality education, can equip the children and youth with the skills, abilities and opportunities necessary to break free from poverty and put them on track to a better future. We particularly aim to support girls in going to school as they are often forced into early marriages to relieve their parents from the burden of care. The opportunity to study can help build a brighter future!
