Following public health guidelines and guidance from the NYC Department for the Aging, we have re-opened our centers at limited capacity (currently 25%). Our seniors have been isolated more than ever before during this pandemic, and it is wonderful to be able to provide these services in-person after a long wait. These services entail yoga, health lectures, recreational programs, Grab & Go meals, and case management services, among others. Plus, our sessions are streamed live so that those at home who are able to join virtually can be engaged as well!

At our South Asian Community Home (Jamaica Estates) location we have commenced programs from 10am-2pm every Friday (see flyer attached). We provide case management on an appointment basis at our office location as well.

Your donations have helped us through this tumultous year to continue providing services, and is helping our community come back. Thank you for all your support!!!

Holi celebrations!

We hope our GlobalGiving family has been having a great year thus far.

We at India Home have been busy with our activities, including home-delivered meals, groceries, virtual senior center programs, remote case management, wellness check-up calls and group counseling among others.

This has especially been an important moment at our organization, as COVID-19 vaccinations have become a priority, especially for older adults. Our COVID-19 Test & Trace team has been hard at work reaching our communities at houses of worship, food pantries, and other high traffic locations, to ensure that our community not only gets tested, but also gets equitable access to vaccines. Our programming team has been working diligently every week to match seniors with vaccine appointments and thus far have booked more than 300 of such appointments.

We are following DFTA guidelines diligently and plan on re-opening accordingly, when we get guidance from the NYC government public health guidelines. While we may not know when this will exactly happen, we will continue to serve our community the way we have this past year, and will be ready for whatever the future holds.

Furthermore, our senior center at Wexford Terrace is ours! We have closed on the property and it is now our home. We will be ready once re-opening guidance is given to have this center up and running. Your every donation will help us to renovate and equip this center to become the state-of-the-art facility we have envisioned.

Thank you, for your continued support, and we pray for a hopeful future ahead!

This year has taken an unprecedented course. Our South Asian Community Home continues to be a priority for us, though we have had to pivot to address the overwhelming needs this year with culturally tailored services, including meal provision as well as virtual programs.

In the past year we have never stopped working and serving our community. In addition to virtual events providing physical activity, education, and creative opportunities, we have provided culturally competent meals delivered directly to the safety of seniors' homes. We deliver meals three times a week to about 112 seniors, which has surpassed 13,000+ meals served to seniors this pandemic. We are still working to feed as many seniors as possible in the year to come. The individualization and cultural understanding that goes into the meals help ensure that seniors are not left having to eat poor quality meals due to their income or culture.

We have also been delivering grocery packages to seniors, specifically curated to ensure nutritional meals that are also culturally competent. Each grocery package costs anywhere between $55-75. We have delivered groceries to over 500 seniors. To date, we have delivered 1,000+ grocery packages, each filled with South Asian kitchen staples such as dhal, rice, oil, onions, spices etc.

As the year comes to a close and the public health situation evolves, we want to ensure we are able to continue these programs into the following year. We are excited to have the South Asian Community Home up and running once it is safe to do so.

We hope from the bottom of our hearts that you have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

Helping seniors find home..at home!
Helping seniors find home..at home!

Since the last time you heard from us, we were moving as planned in all aspects, including the progress of our South Asian Community Home.

Given the obvious change of situation with the pandemic, India Home adapted our services quickly to respond to COVID-19.

COVID-19 had devastating effects on the specific population we serve. Despite our center at Wexford Terrace closing to allow for safe quaranting, India Home quickly responded to the needs of the South Asian senior community and has continued to serve an even higher number of clients than ever before. We have been guiding and ensuring our community gets accurate information and resources in-language. We have prioritized food security and implemented a culturally competent home-delivered meal and grocery program which serves meals to 110 seniors three days a week and has served groceries to over 600 seniors. In this program, India Home partners with culturally competent caterers and grocers, who deliver the meals to low-income seniors. Our dedication to reducing social isolation and promoting health & wellness has also continued, as we quickly transitioned to virtual senior programs, including informational lectures, yoga, meditation and creative aging. We have also continued to provide case management, telephone reassurance, counseling, ESL & citizenship classes, among other programs, through which we have reached 5,900+ service units virtually, despite quarantine measures. During this pandemic, we have provided 6,000+ home-delivered meals, home-delivered groceries to 600+ seniors across NYC, and made 9,370+ telephone reassurance calls to isolated seniors.

Our services are far-reaching and while we are unable to gather in-person at SACH, we are prioritizing our seniors' health and are hopeful the community center will be up and running in the near future. In the meantime, we are very close to closing on the Wexford property, and excited to see what the future holds for SACH!

Census Teach-In
Census Teach-In

The South Asian Community Home is abuzz with activities!

Last month, we hosted a teach-in in which our seniors were able to learn about the Census and why it is so important for our communities to be counted. Please do reach out to us if you would like to be involved.

We also recently hosted a low-impact dance workshop where students from NYU taught our seniors a dance routine, to encourage exercise as a part of healthy living for our seniors. They really had us on our feet!

Every Tuesday, our members enjoy working with an art instructor through the SUCASA program, in which they are learning mural painting.

On Fridays, we hold Creative Aging workshops where our seniors engage with a variety of art forms and create their own masterpieces.

Technology classes are held weekly in which navigating computers and phones are made more accessible to older adults.

We also hold drama classes in Bengali on Friday afternoons, in which a play focusing on health education is being put together.

ESL classes take place every week, in which our seniors are able to learn and practice the language in practical ways.

We are lucky to be growing with all the activities we have going on and thank you for your help in getting us here!

We still are in need of funding to renovate and furnish the space. Our goal is to be able to offer full-fledged senior center programming after meeting these renovation needs. Your continued support would allow us to offer more and more to our growing senior community.

Thank you for your support and consideration,

India Home Team
