Low-Impact Dance Classes with Parijat Desai!

We are so grateful for your support in our journey to establish a South Asian Community Home for seniors to call their own in Queens, NY.

In terms of our progress, we have signed the contract for the property and aim to close by January or February 2020. We have more funds to raise in order to meet the purchase cost and renovation needs of the South Asian Community Home, and this #GivingTuesday, we were able to fundraise over $5000 towards this. Thank you!

There is still a good amount needed for us to get to the end goal of a fully outfitted center for our seniors to call our own, but through your help we are getting closer and closer.

In the meantime, we have started offering classes at this location! Art, dance, and technology classes are being offered on a weekly basis. Our seniors are able to grow their skills and connect with each other. Our ultimate dream once this center is acquired and fully renovated is to provide full-day, senior center programming.

With your help, we can get there!

Thank you for all of your support thus far!

The moment is finally here! Our South Asian Community Home has become a reality, as we have gotten ownership of the three suites at our Wexford Terrace location.

Now that this major step has taken place, we have spent some time to map out the future of this space and figure out how we can make the South Asian Community Home the state-of-the-art center we intend for it to be (see images). We envisioned an expansive, flexible space that will accomodate a multitude of uses. The office space will be organized more efficiently. The Multipurpose room will include a spacious programming area and be able to turn into a Yoga, Dance, or Culinary Studio when needed. There is a Media Center and Arts & Crafts area in this room as well. The Computer Lab will allow for seniors to increase their tech literacy skills, and provide an area for relevant lectures. There is also a library for seniors to engage with literature from their languages and an area for the Dementia Day Program. These rooms will be interconnected through foldable walls that will allow for the space to expand when necessary.

We are excited about these possibilities and are fortunate to have had your support to get us this far. Recently we held our Ten Year Anniversary Celebration at Swan Club, where we were able to celebrate our journey over this past decade in improving the quality of life for seniors in New York. We are grateful for each and every one of you who has helped us to get us to where we are today. We hope to continue to have your support as we move forward and make this "home away from home" for seniors a reality!

We thank you for your support in our capital campaign towards creating the South Asian Community Home. We are currently in the process of closing the contract to secure ownership of the property. We are just a few steps away! We hope to have acquisition of the center by the end of the year.

In the meantime, we have held several programs at this location, which is allowing for the seniors to familiarize themselves better with the center and our office. We have an ongoing weekly arts program with an instructor from the Caribbean American Repertory Theatre. The seniors are being taught different ways to engage with their creativity and learning how to Waltz! They are also avid in sharing their music and dance with the instructor as well, which has resulted in a beautiful growing cultural exchange. We held a lovely Holi event recently at the center as well. Seniors shared different ways of celebrating Holi in different regions of South Asia and of course, enjoyed the colorful gulal powder!

Our next function at this center will be to celebrate April 14th, the new year in many different regions and cultures throughout South Asia. Boishaki, Vaisakhi, Puththaandu, and other holidays will be celebrated on this day. We are excited to bring together seniors from all different regions to attend this event.

We thank you for your continuous support in helping us provide these programs, and bring more smiles to our seniors' faces! :)

This campaign on Global Giving that we started for the first time in September really was a milestone for us. First of all, we have to thank you, our donors! You all blew us away with your support towards our campaign. Within a short amount of time, you helped us reach our goal on Global Giving of raising $10,000 to go towards creating a South Asian Community Home, and we soon exceeded that number! Furthermore, India Home got recognized as a "Top Ranked" non profit because of the high levels of engagement with our cause. We couldn't have done it without your generosity and your belief in the work we do.
India Home has continued to provide exemplary culturally sensitive services to South Asian seniors, and our number of clients have steadily kept growing. Our seniors at Sunnyside recently performed a whole three hour play of the Ramayana (a mythological epic) for Diwali, with memorized scripts, costumes, props, the whole shebang!  The amount of hard work and dedication they put into the event, and the joy on their faces after having performed that, truly was unforgettable. Furthermore, they were able to engage with their creativity and cognitive skills in a fun, celebratory way! Our seniors have been continuing to participate actively in yoga classes and receive nutritious meals from local South Asian vendors. They have had a variety of lectures these past few months as well, including those on legal rights and health issues, and have had health screenings as well.
The engagement from our members keeps us driven everyday to find creative ways to help their health and wellness, and to motivate us in our campaign to raise the funds to provide the comprehensive, state-of-the-art community center for our seniors. Since September, we have held two events (which some of you have attended) to honor our supporters for the South Asian Community Home and to also help with fundraising for this campaign. It was beautiful to see the way our community came together to support South Asian seniors.  Our members also came from all centers and showed off their talents in a variety of languages, through singing, dancing, poetry, and drama.
We thank you once again for your dedication towards helping our community, and hope we can have your support moving forward as we continue on the capital campaign to create the South Asian Community Home for our seniors. Our Executive Director and Board have been tirelessly searching for the perfect building in Queens to meet the needs of our seniors. We will keep you updated and we hope to have your help every step of the way!
