May brought another edition of our monthly Senior Social Club - this time with a multigenerational flair that brought the young and old together for an afternoon of festivities! Our usual group of 25 seniors was joined this time by our staff's children, who put their creative energies to use alongside them in an art session.
As usual, our team of health promoters ("promotoras") prepared a talk, this month focusing on diabetes management, served a healthy lunch, and indulged everyone in a little sugar with a birthday cake to celebrate the month's club members' May birthdays.
Our team is currently exploring in-depth the topic of diabetes and the way that it impacts our community - educating themselves on best methods of support, identifying at-risk individuals, and taking classes to further their knowledge of the disease. We hope to help some of the seniors in the group who suffer from diabetes - accounting for about 1 in 3 participants - with future programming targeting diabetes management.
Our social club will continue as always, but we are excited at the possibility of providing new services to seniors now that other parts of their programming have been phased out in the last year. We thank you for your continued support as we adapt our programs to meet the needs of the community, create bonds that last until late in life, and provide services to an oft-neglected but growing number of vulnerable seniors across rural Mexico. We could not do this work without you!
