Summary

Our Golden Years project provides networked community support to a group of 30+ seniors in northern Mexico. Our team provides daily health checks and a hot, healthy meal featuring produce from our gardens straight to the doors of each senior, along with a monthly senior social aimed at fostering connection through food, fun, and games. In the future, we aim to expand our reach to more seniors, take them on guided group trips, and provide enhanced daily support through our programming.

Challenge

In the absence of essential healthcare infrastructure such as hospitals or nursing homes, and with high levels of poverty, many of Palomas' elderly residents face daily complications living independently. To reach this vulnerable population, our team of five health promoters ("Promotoras") performs daily health checks, cooks and delivers a hot and healthy meal featuring fresh produce from our community greenhouses, and organizes a monthly "senior social" complete with lunch, fun, and games.

Solution

For this project, we seek funding to expand this existing programming for seniors. We would like to continue supporting them in living healthy and fulfilling lives, contributing to long-term project viability and building community support infrastructure for an oft-neglected population who deserves to live with dignity and connection. This funding would cover daily meals, materials for our monthly gatherings, equipment for our health checks, and group excursions to foster community well-being.

Long-Term Impact

This project has the potential to improve quality and longevity of life for a community of vulnerable seniors who were previously living with little support. Some seniors in Palomas have never left the region, and we would furthermore like to give them opportunities later in life to enjoy arts, culture, and community. With time, we hope that we can inspire neighboring community actors to replicate our model and leverage support for their seniors by connecting with our programs.
