Transforming lives through WASH

By Prativa K.C. | MEAL Manager

NEWAH utilized GlobalGiving funds alongside other contributions to implement 54 WASH projects (53 community projects and 1 school WASH project) in 2024–25, serving 4,028 Households, 49 schools, and 7 health centers. The WASH initiatives directly benefitted a total of 29,571 individuals, including 23,441 community members, 5,955 students, and 175 individuals from health centers in 14 Rural Municipalities and 6 municipalities of Baglung, Myagdi, Sindhuli, and Kavre. These projects aimed to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services in underserved communities.

NEWAH adopted the total sanitation approach to promote sustainable behavior change in hygiene and sanitation. Through community-based education, capacity building, school WASH committees, and child health groups, the organization conducted extensive hygiene promotion. Community members proactively initiated and constructed household sanitation and hygiene facilities, fostering long-term behavioral transformation and sustainable improvements in WASH practices. Community members actively contributed to improved household hygiene by constructing 3,747 dish drying racks, 3,791 washing slabs, 3,642 handwashing stations equipped with soap and water, and 3,951 solid waste management units.

To reinforce hygiene practices, communities were oriented on the importance of hand washing with soap, and IEC materials were widely distributed. Awareness campaigns, including those held during WASH-related days and Menstrual Hygiene Day, focused on domestic water treatment and sanitation behaviors. These integrated activities supported progress toward achieving the national goal of declaring clean and healthy communities under Nepal’s total sanitation guidelines.
