An estimated 3.5 million Nepalese lack access to basic water supply and a majority of this population occupies the rural hills of the country. Lack of water supply is also preventing these people from adhering to good hygiene and sanitation practices such as using a toilet and handwashing.
The rugged, fragile geography makes water supply difficult in the hills of the country. Climate change and frequent disasters further exacerbate the water supply problem. Without access to potable water, people rely on unprotected sources that are often contaminated with fecal matter. Contaminated water is responsible for frequent outbreak of waterborne diseases and remains a leading cause of child mortality in the country. Furthermore, there is a major funding shortfall in rural water supply.
In coordination with the local government, NEWAH will facilitate to construct water supply system in the communities to provide access to safe water at the doorsteps and promote improved sanitation and good hygiene practices to bring about sustainable behavior changes. While doing so, the project will ensure local people's active and meaningful participation in all stages of project and empower women and socially excluded groups to take part in decision-making.
This is a lifechanging project for the community, enabling them to live a healthy and dignified life full of new opportunities. Through access to safe water, improved sanitation, and safe hygiene services, no children, men and women will ever die from waterborne diseases; thereby contributing to improved public health status and increased opportunities for women and children to engage in education, economic activities, and improved overall productivity, leading to better quality of life.
