An old age home is a place for elderly people who either have no family or have been abandoned by their families. Loneliness, negligence and less importance, illness due to aging and against lack of care are among the most perilous conditions that the elderly face. Old age homes provide all basic amenities like accommodation, food, clothes, medical care & counseling for old people. The staff in the old age homes makes every possible effort to make their stay as comfortable and peaceful as possible so that they can live their lives in peace as well.
ICA Nepal pays a visit to Himalayan Old Age Home, an old aged home located in Kathmandu. Around fifty elderly men and women, ranging in age from fifty to ninety years, are housed in this foundation. We were left feeling devastated and nostalgic after they shared their sentiments with us. Initially, it was quite difficult to digest the reality that we witnessed the elderly parents not being cared for, mistreated and outcast from their families, societies and communities as well. With the extended of lockdown on Covid-19, an old age home faced financial hardship and ran out of daily essential supplies and donations they relied on. In Covid-19, old age homes face two challenges: how to save old people from disease and how to save from a lack of supplies in their houses. We provided clothes for approximately 50 older persons as well as Rs. 20,000 in cash to improve the condition of the old age home. They looked happy after receiving gift, but we can sense their pain at being abandoned by their loved ones and obtaining something from strangers. We discovered that, while the elderly are content in their old age homes, they are suffering from a variety of issues on the inside, including emotional, social, financial, and physiological issues as well as a lack of facilities and health issue.
The plight of living in an old age home where you are forced to adjust and reside with unknown people is quite challenging. However, with the passage of time, every member of this group now lives happily and calmly in a sense of unity among themselves. The old age homes are the elderly last hope for a better life.
