The second quarter of the financial year 2018-19 was eventful for us at Arpan both at the programmatic font and at the level of organizational development. This quarter, we have touched the lives of 23,420 children and adults through our 3 programmes - Personal Safety Education, Mental Health Services and Child Sexual Abuse Education and Training. In the first six months, we have already achieved 65% of our annual target. Arpan has also participated in public engagement activities through events for creating wider visibility of the issue. Arpan has developed a host of resources to support its programme and also made considerable progress in developing an online course on personal safety. At the operation front, Arpan has initiated different employee engagement activities and has been certified as a Great Place to Work.
Personal Safety education (PSE)
Personal Safety Education Programme (PSE) is a life skill-based module which teaches children to identify safe and unsafe situations, skills to refuse and get away from incidents of Child Sexual Abuse and seek help. The programme also works with adult caregivers so that they can create a safe environment for children and respond effectively. This quarter, Arpan worked with children in new schools and in schools, where Arpan had conducted the Personal Safety Education Programme earlier. We have reached out to over 14,800 children and adults through this programme. We have also provided counselling to 336 children post the programme through 1048 individual sessions. We also provided psychoeducation to 80 caregivers of these children through 144 individual sessions and facilitated 18 joint sessions with the child and their trusted adult.
Mental Health services
Through our Mental Health services, we have worked with institution-based 35 adolescents and adult survivors through 58 individual sessions and 12 group sessions. We have also worked with 29 children and 11 adult survivors who reached out to Arpan for healing support. Arpan has started a Study Group for social workers and counsellorsto provide them with constant handholding in addressing the cases of Child Sexual Abuse. The study group will focus on enhancing knowledge on theory through extensive reading and will also have regular case presentation in order to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Child Sexual Abuse Education and Training
We have conducted training and capacity building sessions with 475 professionals including teachers, mental health professionals, social workers, caregivers and support personnel through government bodies and non-government organizations. The training and capacity building focused on 'Understanding Child Sexual Abuse', 'Personal Safety Education' and 'Barefoot Counselling'. In this quarter, we have conducted training sessions in Dewas, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Chandrapur, Kalyan, Kolhapur, Nagpur (Maharashtra), Goa, (Goa), Jhajjar (Haryana), Siliguri (West Bengal) and Delhi (Delhi). Arpan has also advocated for mainstreaming child protection at the national and state level. Arpan has been closely working on the theme of Safety and Security with the National Council for Educational Research & Training (NCERT) and submitted final drafts for Curriculum Development under the aegis of Ayushman Bharat. Arpan has advocated for Personal Safety Education to be integrated into the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum and conducted Training of Teachers at the Centre of Excellence, Delhi. Arpan has also partnered with UNICEF and WCD for conducting Training of Trainers on Personal Safety Education across the country. Arpan has also been actively working with the Kolhapur Nagar Parishad, Zila Parishad, Mumbai Suburban Municipal Corporation, L WARD Schools, MSCERT to advocate for the integration of Personal Safety Education Programme.
Public engagement
Arpan has participated in 3 events in this quarter - RYLA event organized by Inner Wheel Club and Rotary Club of South Mumbai, Poster competition at Sophia Polytechnic's Applied College Mumbai, Rotary Ganpati Utsav the occasion of Mumbai Divas and reached out to 486 individuals. Arpan had a stall at the flea market of Rotary Ganpati Utsav at Chitrakoot Banquets, Andheri West where we presented our work and shared our resources at the exhibition along with other NGOs. Ms Pooja Taparia - CEO & Founder, Arpan and Mr Kiran Khalap - Co-founder and Managing Director, Chlorophyll judged the poster competition at Sophia Polytechnic's Applied College, Mumbai. The 2nd-yr students participated in the competition and depicted diverse nuances of the issue of Child Sexual Abuse through their work. Arpan got an opportunity to present its work and the Personal Safety Education programme at the RYLA event organized by Inner Wheel Club and Rotary Club of South Mumbai among eminent club members, school principals, teachers, students of various schools across Mumbai.
Arpan has also gained significant media coverage through 6 print media articles and 1 online article and 5 visual media coverage.
