The last few months have been special for Arpan for many reasons.  One of the special moments had been Arpan turning 10 on 12th November.  It has been indeed a proud moment for us. In the last few months, Arpan touched the lives of over 13000 children and adults through its Personal Safety Education Programme, Mental Health Programme and Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Training Programme.

Workshops by Leading Scholar and Practitioner of Child Protection

To mark the 10 years of Arpan’s journey, we had organised a series of workshops by Prof David Finkelhor, and Dr Lois Engelbrecht on 27th and 28th November. Prof David Finkelhor is an eminent sociologist and Director of Crimes against Children Research Center, Co-Director of the Family Research Laboratory and Professor of Sociology, University of New Hampshire. Dr Lois Engelbrecht is the Founder Trustee, Centre for Prevention and Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse, Manila, Philippines. It was a lifetime experience to learn from them on diverse dynamics of Child Sexual Abuse and its interplay with socio-cultural factors.

Launch of the ‘Integration of Personal Safety Education Programme in Schools’- A case study

‘Integration of Personal Safety Education Programme in Schools - A Case Study’ was launched in an event on 29th November organized to celebrate Arpan’s 10-year journey. The evaluation was conducted with 5 schools of Bombay Cambridge Gurukul and demonstrates the efficacy of making Personal Safety Education a part of school curriculum and the impact it has had on the lives of children. The research found that all children who had faced an unsafe situation demonstrated the assertive and help-seeking behaviour.

You can access the research at the following link:

The launch and 10 years celebration were participated by numerous donors, partners, advisors and supporters from India and the world.

Conducting Virtual Awareness Session

The Training team conducted our first 'Virtual' awareness session with Principals and teachers of 408 (centres) BMC schools across Mumbai through the medium of 'Virtual Classes' set up by MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai). The session was insightful with great learnings for both participants and team Arpan.

Initiating work with Ashramshalas

Ashram schools are residential schools run especially for tribal children who hail from a cluster of habitations. These children are provided boarding and lodging facilities in schools. The objective of the Ashram Schools is to provide children with an environment conducive to development. While Arpan has been working with the schools and institutional staff and caregivers; for the first time Arpan has engaged with 16 Ashram Schools in Pen, Raigad, Maharashtra and conducted awareness sessions on ‘Understanding Child SexualAbuse’ with superintendents and teacher.

Honoured to host Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India.

Shri Anil Swarup is the Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India. We were honoured that he attended a Personal Safety Education Session with children and visited Arpan to know more about our work. He also met school Principals and brainstormed on the way forward to make child safety an agenda for school education by engaging with all stakeholders.
