On Tuesday, March 7, Eduardo Carrasquero, Director of Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro, visited the preschool beneficiaries of the "Una Arepa Para Mi País" program, which is managed jointly with the Fundacion Pabellón Con Arepa. The purpose of the visit was to check upon the results about the program. The areas where the preschoolers, the teachers, the cooks, the preparation of food, even tasting it, are located and, of course, sharing with the main reason for the program: the children.

In the words of Eduardo Carrasquero himself, we share his testimony about the visit:

"I must say that my impression is extraordinary. The mystique with which the teachers work and the few resources they have, the education that these little children give them, all dressed up, uniformed... the colored arepas are extraordinary, it really is commendable work , the effort and dedication that these women have for these little children basically out of conviction, because really with the salaries they earn they do it out of love and for trying to contribute a grain of sand to education, which is fundamentally the basis of what A country like ours needs... Education! Education! Education! Education! Because without education we won't get ahead. It really is commendable, it's impressive, the cleanliness, the orderliness, it's really incredible what I saw, what I felt with those guys and the teachers. And that obviously includes in that film the work of José Gregorio Velásquez at the head of the Foundation, because without food education does not advance and what Pabellón is doing with Arepa is a job, also out of the ordinary, that must be continue to support, and that is what we are doing... to help them have a good diet, a good education and, in this way, contribute to building a better country."

For members of Pabellón Con Arepa, it was an honor to be able to receive our main allies in this mission that we have assumed in 2017 to provide food, education, recreation and love to the most vulnerable children in the most intricate neighborhoods of Caracas. That they learn more about the day to day of the program, share with the children, see with their own eyes the preparation of the food, taste it while eating delicious empanaditas and colored arepas. But, above all, that they witness in their own flesh, the effort of those who make possible the mission of nurturing, educating and loving a few of the most needy little ones in our city, in addition to the mystique and vocation with which we do it.

It was a valuable opportunity for "Opportunidad y Futuro" and "Pabellón Con Arepa" to look into each other's eyes, shake hands and say: "Wow, we are doing such a job"; and for teachers, cooks and children to share with those who work for and for them.

El pasado martes 7 de marzo Eduardo Carrasquero, Director de la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro, realizó una visita a los preescolares beneficiarios del programa "Una Arepa Para Mi País", y que se maneja en conjunto con la Fundación Pabellón Con Arepa. La visita tuvo como finalidad conocer más de cerca los protagonistas del programa. Es decir, las zonas donde se ubican los preescolares, las maestras, las cocineras, la preparación de los alimentos, incluso degustarlos y, por supuesto, compartir con la razón del programa: los niños.

En palabras del mismo Eduardo Carrasquero, compartimos su testimonio sobre la visita:

"Debo decir que mi impresión es extraordinaria. La mística con que trabajan las maestras y los pocos recursos que tienen, la educación que le dan esos niñitos, todos formaditos, uniformados... las arepas de colores son extraordinarias, realmente es una labor encomiable, el esfuerzo y la dedicación que tienen esas mujeres por esos niñitos básicamente por convicción, porque realmente con los salarios que ganan lo hacen es por cariño y por tratar de aportar un granito de arena a la educación, que fundamentalmente es la base de lo que necesita un país como el nuestro... Educación! educación! educación! educación! porque sin educación no salimos adelante, realmente es encomiable, es impresionante, la limpieza, lo ordenado, es increíble realmente lo que vi, lo que sentí con esos muchachos y las maestras. Y eso obviamente incluye en esa película la labor de José Greogrio Velásquez al frente de la Fundación, porque sin alimentación la educación no avanza y  y lo que está haciendo Pabellón con Arepa es un trabajo, también fuera de serie, que hay que seguir apoyando, y en eso estamos… para ayudarlos a que tengan una buena alimentación, una buena educación y, de esa manera, contribuyan a la construcción de un mejor país."

Para los miembros de Pabellón Con Arepa fue un honor poder recibir a nuestros principales aliados en esta misión que asumimos desde 2017 de brindar alimentación, educación, recreación y amor a los niños más vulnerables de los barrios más intrincados de Caracas. Que conozcan más de cerca el día a día del programa, compartieran con los niños, vieran con sus propios ojos la preparación de los alimentos, los degustaran comiendo ricas empanaditas y arepas de colores. Pero, sobre todo, que presenciaran en carne propia, el esfuerzo de quienes hacen posible la misión de nutrir, educar y amar a unos cuantos pequeñines de los más necesitados de nuestra ciudad, además de la mística y vocación con que lo hacemos.

Fue una valiosa oportunidad para que  "Oportunidad y Futuro" y "Pabellón Con Arepa" se miraran a los ojos, estrecharan las manos y se dijeran: "Guao, tamaña labor estamos haciendo"; y para que maestras, cocineras y niños compartieran con quienes trabajan por y para ellos.

Christmas is a very special time for children, because of Santa Claus, the gifts, the birth of the baby Jesus, the end of the year; but also because it is shared with the family, moments in which food becomes the center of family integration: panettone, Christmas dinner, toasts.

In Venezuela, the traditional Christmas food is the "hallaca" (stew of beef, pork and chicken wrapped with olives, capers and raisins in a corn dough wrapped in banana or roasted banana leaves, all parboiled), “pan de jamón” which is ham bread (bread stuffed with ham, raisins and green olives stuffed with red pepper or paprika) and the “pernil” which is roast leg (rear end of the pork marinated and baked over low heat).

But this traditional meal is not possible today in most Venezuelan homes, because it is a very expensive tradition, especially in the hard times that the country is experiencing due to its political-economic crisis that has led to a true humanitarian crisis that nothing got better in the face of the pandemic.

Many Venezuelan homes have been missing their tradition for years. The price of a loaf of ham is around USD 10,00 in a country where the official monthly minimum wage is USD 7,00 (and falling every day due to hyperinflation), not to mention what it would take to prepare “hallacas” or “pernil”.

But the program not only fed the children benefiting from our program throughout the year, but also managed to provide that special Christmas meal that will surely be missing in many of these homes.

Because happiness is also being able to share, not only with the family, but also among classmates and teachers, and maintaining those rich flavors and traditions that make us what we are, is part of the education that forms us, is that what From this mission that we assumed since 2017, we continue to provide... that all these children continue to learn and develop healthy and happy, in constant interaction with their peers in an appropriate climate for learning and within their customs and traditions, despite any crisis.

As the teacher Isabel, a woman educator in the area where we operate and founder of schools and soup kitchens, as well as being our main inspiration, used to say:

Finaliza 2022 y con él un año más de nuestra labor nutriendo los niños más vulnerables en su escuela para que no abandonen sus aulas por falta de comida.

Y es que el aprendizaje no puede ser efectivo si la desnutrición llega a afectar el organismo de los niños, y más en una edad de vital importancia para su desarrollo como la edad preescolar. Con la desnutrición llega la falta de energía y con ésta la falta de alegría.

Y es que, como decía el gran psicólogo Albert Bandura, el aprendizaje es social, los niños aprenden también interactuando unos con otros, imitando... Socializando... Pero sin energía y sin alegría este aprendizaje se ve truncado

La navidad es una época muy especial para los niños, por Santa Claus, los regalos, el nacimiento del niño Jesús, el fin de año; pero también porque se comparte en familia, momentos en qué la comida se vuelve el centro de integración familiar: el panettone, la cena navideña, los brindis.

En Venezuela la comida de tradición navideña es la “hallaca” (guiso de res, cerdo y pollo envuelto con aceitunas, alcaparras y uvas pasas dentro de una masa de maíz envuelto en hojas de cambur o plátano asadas todo sancochado), el pan de jamón (pan relleno de jamón, uvas pasas y aceitunas verdes rellenas con pimiento o pimentón rojo) y el pernil asado (extremidad trasera del cerdo adobada y horneada a fuego lento).

Una tradición muy costosa por demás, especialmente en los duros mementos que vive el país debido a su crisis político económica que lo han llevado a una verdadera crisis humanitaria que nada mejoró ante la pandemia.

Muchos hogares venezolanos llevan años perdiéndose su tradición. El precio de un pan de jamón ronda los $10 en un país cuyo salario mínimo mensual oficial es de $7 (y bajando cada día debido a la hiperinflación), sin mencionar lo que implicaría preparar hallacas o pernil.

Pero el programa no sólo proporcionó alimentación a los niños beneficiarios de nuestro programa durante todo el año, sino que además logró brindar esa comida especial navideña que seguramente faltará en muchos de estos hogares.

Porque la felicidad está también en poder compartir, no solo en familia, también entre compañeros de clase y maestras, y mantener esos ricos sabores y tradiciones que nos hacen ser lo que somos, es parte de la educación que nos forma, es que lo que desde esta misión que asumimos desde 2017 seguimos brindando… que todos estos niños sigan aprendiendo y desarrollándose sanos y felices, en constante interacción con sus semejantes en un clima apropiado para el aprendizaje y dentro de sus costumbres y tradiciones, a pesar de cualquier crisis.

Como decía la maestra Isabel, mujer educadora de la zona donde operamos y fundadora de escuelas y comedores, además de ser nuestra principal inspiración:

               “Barriga llena: corazón contento… y cerebro abierto”

Porque no se puede pensar en brindar una educación de calidad, mientras los niños tengan hambre.Y esa es la razón de nuestro programa.

Not even during the pandemic did our nutritional program stop, and under the strictest bio-safety regulations, both schoolwork and food were sent to the children through their mothers, fathers and representatives. Not to mention that mothers, faced with the need they live in the sector and committed to feeding and educating their children, look for their food every day.

For us it is very important to let suppporters know that our program has not stopped since 2017, even in the most critical periods. And that thanks to their contribution we will continue to do so because we understand that while we Venezuelans continue to look for ways to overcome this crisis, we cannot let the future die, and the future is them, our children.

En Venezuela, cada periodo escolar inicia a mediados de septiembre y concluye a finales de julio. Por esta razón, los días del mes de agosto y la primera mitad de septiembre corresponde a las vacaciones.

Pero nuestra fundación, desde que comenzó la crisis humanitaria en nuestro país, se ha abocado a nutrir niños vulnerables en edad preescolar, en su escuela, con la finalidad de que los mismos no abandonen sus aulas por falta de comida, aprendan, crezcan sanos, felices, y no sufran los embates de la desnutrición en una etapa tan crucial para su desarrollo.

Ni durante la pandemia nuestro programa nutricional se detuvo, pues, y bajo las más estrictas normas de bio-seguiridad, tanto las tareas escolares como los alimentos se le hacían llegar a los niños a través de sus madres, padres y representantes. Mucho menos puede detenerse su nutrición debido a la interrupción vacacional. Si bien los niños cierran los cuadernos durante un corto receso de aproximadamente 6 semanas, consideramos que deben seguir nutriéndose adecuadamente pues ante la seguridad de que no podrán hacerlo de igual forma en sus casas, preferimos dar continuidad al programa.

Afortunadamente el programa cuenta con directivos y maestras dispuestos a mantener sus escuelas abiertas. Así como cocineras que aceptan el reto de seguir nutriendo aun durante el periodo vacacional. Sin dejar de mencionar que las madres, ante la necesidad que viven en el sector y comprometidas con la alimentación y educación de sus hijos, buscan cada día sus alimentos.

Para nosotros es muy importante hacerle saber a los benefactores que nuestro programa no se ha detenido desde 2017 aun en los periodos más críticos. Y que gracias a su aporte lo seguiremos haciendo porque entendemos que mientras los venezolanos seguimos buscando maneras de superar esta crisis, no podemos dejar morir el futuro, y el futuro son ellos, nuestros niños.

Como decía la maestra Isabel, mujer pionera en la zona de La Vega en el tema de la nutrición educativa y nuestra principal inspiración:

This Program has been possible for 5 years thanks to a harmonious relationship between Mothers, Schools and our Foundation. Although it is true that it is not the function of schools to provide food for children, they have heeded our request and have taken on the challenge to which the Venezuelan crisis has led them. Having a kitchen and implementing all the logistics of food preparation is not an easy task, and much less without the support of the State or individuals. However, kitchen (stove) that was available at Pre-school El Porvenir de Las Torres, was falling apart after years of usage and a replacement was urgently needed. The challenge was to get a new kitchen or the program would have to close, at least temporarily.

This is how the Foundation undertook the task of finding a kitchen (stove) to replace the almost unusable one that had been available until then, in order to continue the program, a task that was assumed with the same enthusiasm with which balanced menus are designed weekly.

Although in 2017 the prevailing humanitarian emergency in Venezuela made us start the program with what little was available in order to start providing food to the children in their school and thus not stop attending, we believed it was time to get a new and durable stove to avoid a certain deterioration that in two or three more years could put the school food program at risk again.

A large stove was required to be able to cook in the large pots and cauldrons that it is necessary to prepare food for large amounts of children, with burners resistant to such weights and made of durable material to withstand the ravages of fire and high temperatures for as long as possible. .

There was no lack of support from anonymous individuals who know first-hand the work of our Foundation, and who without hesitation became allies of the cause to be able to provide the program with a new stove and according to the program's requirements.

This is how in February, the news of a new kitchen (stove) was not only news for the preschool and its children, because the new stove was arriving at the preschool that will allow them to continue making food a reality every day in their school for the youngest vulnerable children from La Vega.

With this, we can proudly say that we will continue to benefit 63 children, only in the El Porvenir preschool (one of the beneficiary institutions of the Foundation), who day by day will continue to be nourished and learn at their school.

Este Programa ha sido posible desde hace 5 años gracias a una relación armónica entre Madres, Escuelas y nuestra ONG. Porque, si bien es cierto que no es función de las escuelas brindar alimentación a los niños, han atendido nuestra solicitud y han asumido el reto al que la crisis venezolana les ha llevado. Tener una cocina e implementar toda la logística de preparación de alimentos no es una tarea fácil, y mucho menos sin el apoyo del Estado ni de particulares… Las madres, a pesar de la crisis y la preocupación que les genera desde los principios del programa, no tener para alimentos en casa para brindar a sus hijos y, en muchos casos, no poder llevarlos al colegio para que no pasen hambre, han sido muy receptivas y colaboradoras para el programa… Una cocina (estufa) vieja pero operativa y la disposición de colaborar para preparar algunos alimentos, picar algunos aliños, preparar algún jugo, así como ir a retirar los mismos a la escuela en tiempo de pandemia (respetando las más estrictas normas de bio-seguridad con tal que los niños no se quedaran sin comer, demuestra su gran nivel de compromiso para con la educación y nutrición de sus hijos.

Pero esta iniciativa colaborativa que en un comienzo dio pie al inicio del programa va caducando, y es así como en el Pre-escolar El Porvenir de Las Torres, la cocina (estufa) de que se disponía ya no daba para más y urgía un reemplazo, so pena de tener que interrumpir el Programa Nutritivo-Escolar por no tener donde cocinar los alimentos. El reto era conseguir una nueva cocina o el programa tendría que cerrar, al menos temporalmente.                                                                                                                                                                              

Es así como la Fundación emprendió la tarea de hallar una cocina (estufa) para reemplazar la casi inservible que se disponía hasta entonces, para así poder continuar el programa, tarea que se asumió con el mismo entusiasmo en que se diseñan semanalmente los menús balanceados, se buscan los alimentos, se trasladan a las zonas de difícil acceso donde se encuentran los preescolares, se preparan y se brindan a los niños cada día en las mesas de su escuela.

Si bien en 2017 la emergencia humanitaria reinante en Venezuela nos hizo emprender el programa con lo poco que se disponía con tal que se empezara a brindar alimentos a los niños en su escuela y así no dejaran de asistir, creímos que era el momento de conseguir un estufa nueva y duradera para evitar un seguro deterioro que en dos o tres años más pudiera poner de nuevo en riesgo el programa alimentario escolar.

Se requería una estufa amplia para poder cocinar en las ollas y calderos grandes que amerita preparar alimentos para cantidades grandes de niños, con hornillas resistentes a tales pesos y fabricadas en material duradero para soportar los embates del fuego y las altas temperaturas durante el mayor tiempo posible.

No faltó el apoyo de particulares anónimos que conocen de primera mano la labor de nuestra ONG, y que sin reparo se hicieron aliados de la causa para poder dotar el programa de una nueva estufa y acorde a los requerimientos del programa.

Es así como en febrero la noticia de una nueva cocina (estufa) no era sólo una noticia para el preescolar y sus niños, pues al preescolar estaba llagando la estufa nueva que permitirá seguir haciendo realidad cada día la alimentación en su escuela de los niños más vulnerables de La Vega.

Con ello, podemos decir con orgullo que seguiremos beneficiando a 63 niños, sólo en el preescolar El Porvenir (unos de las instituciones beneficiarias de nuestro programa), que día a día seguirán nutriéndose y aprendiendo en su escuela.

However, we were able to successfully close  2021 with Christmas activities for the children that the Pabellón Con Arepa Foundation provides to the children who are beneficiaries of the program each year.

And you cannot imagine how gratifying it is to be able to provide these children with moments and spaces for recreation that most of them would not be able to enjoy on their own. An inflatable mattress,  cotton candy, a Christmas meal is unattainable for many of them. And our program was able to bring them to you once again.

The price of a Hallaca (traditional Venezuelan Christmas food made up of corn dough stuffed with a stew made up of pork, chicken, olives, raisins and capers, all wrapped in banana leaves and parboiled) is around $ 3, the equivalent of a Venezuelan official minimum wage. A ham bread (also traditional in Venezuela in the Christmas season) costs from $ 6 to $ 12 depending on the size and quality of the ingredients, approximately two to four official minimum wages. That is why for many it is impossible to enjoy Christmas as in other years, not to mention gifts, new clothes and fireworks that for many became an unattainable luxury.

Llegamos a 2022 y con él al quinto año del programa "Una Arepa Para Mi País". Ya serán cinco años en que de manera consecutiva nutrimos en su escuela  niños vulnerables de la parte alta de La Vega en Caracas todos los días de actividad escolar, incluído los tiempos de pandemia.

Y esto es un gran logro sabiendo que 2021 fue un año muy complicado debido a la crisis humanitaria que se vive en el país desde hace ya varios años, con repercusiones muy graves como la escasez de combustible y todo lo que ello acarrea, en medio de la inflación más alta del mundo y en carencia de mecanismos oficiales que regulen la tasa a la que se transan diariamente las divisas en una sociedad que se ha "dolarizado" de manera informal.

No obstante, pudimos cerrar exitosamente el año 2021 con las respectivas actividades navideñas que la Fundación Pabellón Con Arepa brinda a los niños beneficiarios del programa cada año.

Y no se imaginan lo gratificante que es poder brindar a estos niños momemtos y espacios de recreación que para la mayoría de ellos serían imposible disfrutar por cuenta propia. Un colchón inflable, un algodón de azúcar, una comida navideña es inalcanzable para muchos de ellos. Y nuestro programa pudo brindárselos una vez más.

El precio de una hallaca (comida tradicional navideña venezolana compuesta por masa de maíz rellena de un guiso compuesto a base de cochino, pollo, aceitunas, pasas y alcaparras, todo envuelto en hojas de plátano y sancochado) ronda los $3, el equivalente a un salario mínimo oficial venezolano. Un pan de jamón (también tradicional en Venezuela en la época decembrina) cuestan de $6 a $12 dependiendo del tamaño y la calidad de los ingredientes, aproximadamente de dos a cuatro salarios mínimos oficiales. Es por eso que para muchos resulta imposible disfrutar de la navidad como en otros años, ni hablar de regalos, ropa nueva y fuegos artificosles que para muchos se convirtieron en un lujo inalcanzable.

Llegar al quinto año en que podremos seguir brindando alimentación, recreación y amor a niños que de otra forma nunca podrían disfrutar de un plato navideño, ni hablar de un colchón inflable para saltar y divertirse o un regalo de navidad nos llena de una inmensa satisfacción. No solo por el hecho en sí de poder brindarles un plato de comida o un momento de recreación, sino porque además con ello evitamos que estos pequeños dejen de asistir a sus centros educativos por falta de comida, revirtiendo así los altos niveles de deserción escolar, al menos en los centros educativos donde funciona el programa nutritivo-escolar.

Por esto y mucho más en este momento queremos agradecer especialmente a nuestros benefactores, por todos y cada uno de sus aportes que nos permiten cambiar la realidad de estos niños. Y desearles que tengan un mejor 2022, lleno de paz, properidad, abundancia y salud. En nombre de todos esos pequeñines les decimos Gracias por tanto. Que que Dios les bendiga siempre.
