We want to take this opportunity to share with you, the interview / testimony of Sara Valentina and her daughter Darling Nazareth, a little girl who attends the Semillas del Manana Preschool located in the upper side of the La Vega neighborhood in Caracas. Nazareth benefits daily from the school pantry of the Una Arepa Para mi Pais program managed jointly between Foundations Pabellon con Arepa and Oportunidad y Futuro.

What do you think about the Una Arepa Para Mi País program that the Pabellón Con Arepa Foundation maintains in this and other schools in La Vega?

- Well, this is a big help for our community, because many children lack food, and it is a foundation that helps many children of our parish, all those children who really do not have enough food, do not feed well, are malnourished. So thanks to this foundation, the children of this school receive daily breakfast and lunch.

In the case of your daughter, how do you perceive the benefit for her?

- The benefit is very good, since I work and I can't be with her all day. Additionally, my salary is not enough to provide the quality food she receives here. Here, they prepare a balanced menu, a balanced lunch and I know she is well fed.

In the case of these days of July and August, what do you think of this summer plan that we have programmed so that children like your daughter continue to benefit from the program, enjoy recreational activities such as inflatable mattress, trampolines, visits to the cinema, among others?

- It is very good because children need these recreational spaces, especially at this time when our country is going through this serious crisis. We need to show them a different life. That despite this reality, they can feel good, enjoy, spend time with their friends. With all my heart very grateful because today it is very difficult, almost impossible, to be able to take them to the cinema for example.

Nazareth, what do you eat at school? Tell us

- I eat rice with black beans, and arepa with egg, and also like many things that I like as milk, oatmeal, arepa with meat, ham or cheese.

What about the lunch, what do you eat?

- Pasta with meat, rice with chicken and black beans.

What is your favorite food?

- My favorite food is rice with black bean and plantains.

What would you say to the people who make this program possible?

- I want to say thank you very much and if you are able to, extend it to more schools of this parish. Really very grateful to the school and the foundation.

Spanish translation at the bottom

Thanks to the continuous and increased support of benefactors from around the world through GlobalGiving and to the sponsorship of Healing Venezuela (a non-for-profit organization based in London that contributes to help programs in Venezuela), in April we added one more pre-school to the school lunch program. El Porvenir Preschool is located in the Las Torres section in the highest section of La Vega Neighborhood in Caracas. With 55 children enrolled, this pre-school has personnel capable to support children with special needs such as Asly who suffers from hydrocephalus and David with motor disability.

During the kick-off day, all children ate colorful Arepas (Venezuela typical cornbread meal) enriched with beets, spinach and carrots for breakfast. Dr. Andres Ortiz, a member of Healing Venezuela was able to make it on that day and also toured all the schools supported by the "Una Arepa Para Mi País" Program.

El Porvenir Preschool is the fifth institution that receives support from the Pabellón con Arepa Foundation, thus joining the Canaima School, the Cacique Maturín Preschool, the Semillas del Mañana Preschool and the San Alberto Hurtado Soccer, Sport and Family School, all in the upper section of the La Vega neighborhood in Caracas. In addition to providing breakfast and lunch to children at these schools, we recently kicked off an initiative to creatively combine foods in order to enhance the nutritional value of meals, ensure children are receiving a balanced meals while making it fun for children. The colorful arepas is an example of the result of this initiative. Given the critical shortage of food situation in Venezuela, these initiatives are of great importance for the children wellbeing.

Thanks to the support of all our benefactors and volunteers, this program continue growing in providing creative breakfast and lunch at schools to children in one of most vulnerable communities in Caracas, while fighting against child malnutrition and school drop outs.

Healing Venezuela joins the Opportunity and Future Foundation, Hyperdrive, the beautiful people in Calgary-Canada, Ideas Foundation, Chamos Charity, Sports and Family Soccer School, Sodexo and all our collaborators and arepa ambassadors around the world that make possible the "Una Arepa Para Mi Pais" program.

The project Help Feed 800 school age children in the underpriviledged neighborhood of La Vega (one of the poorest sectors in Caracas) by Fundacion Pabellón con Arepa and Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro ended last year on a high note.

In 2018, Fundacion Pabellón con Arepa became part of a nationwide contest for new enterprises in the category of Non-For Profit Organization entities (Emprendimientos Sociales). For details on the contest, go to the link Concurso Ideas 2018. Participants of this contest received workshops and free advice from experts in different areas with the objective of increasing their skills and knowledge and make their projects sustainable. We are proud to share that the project Help Feed 800 School Age Children was granted the “Premio a la Conciencia” awarded by Ford Motors Venezuela at the prestigious Venezuelan business school Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administration (IESA) on November 15th, 2018. As a direct consequence of its participation in this contest, Fundacion Pabellón con Arepa has been able to establish alliances with corporations that support the mission of the foundation.

For example, in December Sodexo (a multinational corporation who provide food services and facilities management) supported a Christmas event for the children bringing toys and inflatable jump rentals for both the Canaima and Semillas del Mañana schools. Sodexo employees also volunteered in this event. Children also received a traditional Venezuelan Christmas meal called hallacas provided by Fundacion Pabellon con Arepas.

Also, an alliance was made with a nationwide chain of movie theaters (Cines Unidos). Through this alliance, 187 children as well as some parents who served as chaperones were transported from La Vega to the Galerias Avila movie theater in the city where they received tickets to watch The Incredibles movie and were greeted with popcorns and sodas in order to provide them with a complete experience at a movie theater.

Despite economic challenges in the country, Fundacion Pabellon con Arepa remains focused in its mission to provide food for children in La Vega and to keep them in the school system.
