Editha - First Day of School
Editha - First Day of School

As we begin the New Year, the GLK Student Fund is happy to announce two new scholarship recipients: Editha and Eveline.

Editha has just started preschool in the village of Ntoma today.  She was previously living in an abusive home in a dangerous situation. Fortunately, Editha had caring neighbors who noticed what was happening and safely extracted her from the home under the authority of the village elders. They also contacted a trustee of the GLK Student Fund to share Editha's story and request scholarship help.

Editha is happy to be in a school where she can learn and grow with little worry. She even started off her school year with an Obama backpack! Since living in a safe environment, her health has also improved greatly. When she left her home she only weighed 15 kg, and now is at a much healthier weight of 22 kg.

Thank you again to the students of École à Champel and all of those who generously supported the initiative for Editha.

A few years ago when GLK Student Fund first accepted the GlobalGiving challenge, we did so in the hope that Global Giving would help us reach beyond our scope and connect to others who may not be aware of our great work.

Happily, this partnership has connected us to some great new donors and benefitted us immensely. Recently, GlobalGiving helped us connect with a group of children, teachers and friends of Tanzania in Switzerland who raised over $5,000 to send a young girl to school in Tanzania.

This initiative began when two young school girls from Switzerland, Livia and Vera, were motivated to help students in Tanzania. Encouraged by their teacher, Nicholas, they organized a read-a-thon with their classmates in which students were sponsored based on the number pages read in two weeks.  At the end of the two weeks, the students were invited to a dance party where the funds were counted.  The results were extraordinary! (We only wish we were at that party.)  Dar Reality Projects donated an additional CHF 1,000 to the project.  A real success!

The girls, with help from their mothers and recommendations by GlobalGiving, chose our project as the best fit for their donation.  At the same time, GLK Student Fund was evaluating a new scholarship candidate, Editha. Because of the GlobalGiving connection, we will be sending Editha to school.

Editha is eight years old and was previously living with her father and step-mother after her mother passed away. In Tanzania, it is not uncommon for step-parents to take advantage of their step-children. While Editha's half-siblings went to school, Editha was forced to stay at home and do difficult household chores in return for food, meanwhile enduring physical and verbal abuse from her step-mother. Fortunately, a neighbor noticed what was going on and managed to gain custody of Editha (with the assistance of the village elders and permission of her father). Soon, she was on our trustees' radar and the GLK Student Fund worked to quickly find Editha a placement at a boarding school.

The GLK Student Fund is pleased to report that thanks to the generosity of our friends in Switzerland, Editha is safe, secure, and finally going to school.

Thank you Livia, Vera, Teacher Nicholas and the students of École à Champel, Sia, Céline, Angelique, and the Dar Reality Projects.

Kelly and Suzan
Kelly and Suzan

On June 26th, one of Global Giving's in-the-field represenatives, Kelly Kurz came to visit the GLK Student Fund to meet with trustees, Tanzanian volunteers, and, of course, our students. Hosted by Joyce Lwakatare and Philemon Johannes, Kelly said that "he loved meeting the students." When Kelly arrived, he traveled with Joyce and Philemon to visit KEMPS, the school where Gayle Kliever taught for many years and a school where a number of scholarship students attend.

Kelly also visited another school, KADBEMPS, where one of our scholarship students, Suzan is a primary school student at KADBEMPS. During his visit, Kelly had the opportunity to speak with Suzan and her mother to learn more about her experiences at school.

He also had the opportunity to meet Anagrace, another one of our scholarship students to talk about her schooling and her experience with the GLK Student Fund.

Overall, the visit seems to be positive for all parties. The GLK Student Fund has loved the partnership and support Global Giving has offered us and our students and we look forward to more collaboration in the future!

Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for your support of our primary students. Ines, AnnaGrace, and Susan are doing very well.  Right now, we are seeking support for two new students, Jackson and Aristidia who tragically lost their fathers in drowning accidents. Jackson and Aristidia are cousins who currently live together with Jackson's mother and another relative - all in just one room. Jackson's mother sells tomatoes to support them, but it is truly a struggle for her.

Jackson and Arisitida attend a government primary school in Buyekera, Bukoba in rural Tanzania. While public education is officially "free" in Tanzania, the funding for these schools is often inadequate, leaving families to foot the bill for necessities such as composition notebooks, uniforms, school fees, and food.  At this time, Jackson and Arisitida's caretaker is struggling to pay for these school necessities. These young students have already proved that they work hard and succeed even in dire circumstances.  Your support would encourage them and help them be able to continue their studies.

We ask you to consider making a special donation to help Jackson and Aristidia.

                                                                                Thank you.

As we enter the new year, we wanted to take a moment to thank all of our donors who have helped us throughout the year. Your generosity goes directly to AnnaGrace, Ines, and Susan.  Gayle Kliever, our Executive Director will be traveling to Tanzania in the next couple of weeks to visit with our scholarship students and meet new candidates for scholarship support and other programs.

The GLK Student Fund supported fifteen primary school students throughout the year of 2014 and we hope to support more in 2015. Fourteen are on full scholarships and one on a partial scholarship.

Susan, one of our GlobalGiving scholarship students, has been doing well with her studies.  Her mother, her only relative, has been so weak with illness that we decided it was best for Susan to become a boarding student.  She was excited to join her school full-time and wrote a 'thank you' to one of our donors saying:

"Thank you for your kindness to help me with school. I thank you very much and may God continue to bless you very much."
