Help a Tanzanian Orphan Complete Primary School

Dear Supporters,

We hope that you will be able to spend the holidays safe, sound, and surrounded by friends and family.

We wanted to take this time to share with you a common intervention used in Tanzania to protect girls and prepare both boys and girls during the free time they have after completing primary school. The "Pre-Form One" course is a two-three month study time that many young girls in Tanzania take between primary and secondary school.  Most private secondary schools offer this to help ensure that students will smoothly transition from primary to secondary school.  In the wake of many pressures young women in Africa face during adolescence, this course is also used as a means to protect them within a safe environment.

One of our students supported by GlobalGiving funds, Annagrace, has recently completed her Pre-Form One course with flying colors (staight A's), and will be ready to tackle secondary school in January. Annagrace has come so far already in her young academic career. She knows the value of safety as a key factor in securing her education. When Annagrace was a young child, her father passed away and left her under the care of her mother who, several years later, experience a breakdown and lashed out by destroying their home, and threatening her children. She found a safe and secure environment at her primary school thanks to her GlobalGving scholarship.

Dear Supporters,

We'd like to draw your attention to a specific event which impacted many members of our GLK Community

On Saturday September 10^th at 3:27 in the afternoon local time, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck just 26.8 miles outside of Bukoba, Tanzania, the home of many of our students, trustees, and volunteers. The consequences were severe.  Reports tell of 17 fatalities and many injuries. Over 800 buildings were destroyed and most show some level of damage. 

Thankfully, no members of our community suffered serious injuries. However, some buildings and infrastructure in the local community sustained significant damage.

Most schools closed temporarily, although some have begun again.  Kibeta English Medium Primary School (KEMPS), which many of our primary school scholarship students attend, re-opened on September 19th. The boys dorm suffered some damage and one wall of the boys latrine collapsed (see photos below).

Many families are now without a home; These include GLK Trustee Judith Bukambu and her husband Solomon.  Their home was basically destroyed with the damaged walls too unsteady to remain.
