Restore Dignity to 500 Women with Fistula in Kenya

Since our last project update, Gynocare Women’s and Fistula Hospital has continued working to restore health and dignity to women living with obstetric fistula and childbirth-related injuries in underserved communities across Kenya. Through community outreach, referrals, and our established fistula program, we have continued identifying women who have lived with fistula for years because of poverty, stigma, transportation barriers, and limited access to specialized care.

Women identified through our outreach and referral networks have received specialist fistula assessment, free surgical treatment, inpatient care, postoperative management, counselling, and rehabilitation. Our multidisciplinary team continues to support women throughout their recovery, helping them regain continence, confidence, and the ability to return to their families and communities. In addition to clinical treatment, psychosocial support helps address the isolation, stigma, and emotional distress that often accompany fistula.

One of the most meaningful parts of this work is seeing women move from years of isolation toward a renewed sense of hope and belonging. Each successful treatment represents more than a surgical outcome; it can mean being able to sit with family without fear, participate in community life, and live without the constant shame and uncertainty caused by incontinence. We are grateful to the GlobalGiving community for helping us reach women who might otherwise remain untreated and forgotten.

We remain committed to supporting women with free fistula treatment, counselling, rehabilitation, and follow-up care. Continued support will help us identify more women in underserved communities and ensure that treatment is followed by the care and support needed for lasting recovery.

Campaign 52 Impact: 212 Life-Changing Procedures & Expanded Community Reach

Between April 12th and 23rd, 2026, Campaign 52 marked a significant milestone in restoring dignity and health to women across Kenya. During this intensive camp, our medical team successfully carried out 209 procedures and treatments, addressing a wide range of conditions, including fistula repairs, pelvic floor disorders, gynecological conditions such as fibroids and ovarian cysts, as well as colorectal and general surgical cases. Each procedure represented not just medical care, but a second chance, especially for women living with untreated fistula, who often endure isolation and stigma. One patient shared how she had lived in discomfort and silence for years, and after receiving treatment, expressed renewed hope and confidence to reintegrate into her community.

In addition to the surgical camp, our outreach efforts between January and March 2026 reached a remarkable scale. We vaccinated 998 girls against HPV across 16 schools in Uasin Gishu and surrounding regions, including Kidiwa Primary, Huruma Primary, Kapkoros Primary, and Joyland Peace Academy. These school-based programs combined vaccination with education, empowering young girls with knowledge about cervical cancer prevention and breaking long-standing myths around reproductive health.

Our broader community outreach also achieved substantial impact, with 1,644 women screened across multiple regions, including Moisbridge, Kakamega County (531 women), Baringo County (916 women), Eldoret Township, and Chebororwa. Through these outreaches, we provided cervical cancer screening, identified untreated fistula cases for referral, and delivered vital health education. These efforts have led to early detection of cervical abnormalities, increased awareness, and improved access to life-saving care in underserved rural communities.

As we continue this journey, our focus remains on reaching more women in need, strengthening follow-up care, and expanding access to both preventive and surgical services. Every screening, vaccination, and procedure brings us closer to restoring dignity, health, and hope for the women we serve.

Healing, Hope, and Empowerment: Gynocare's Ongoing

During this reporting period, Gynocare introduced the Tumaini Hub, in collaboration with our partner Chameleon Buddies, as a new and important extension of our ongoing women’s health project. While our work has long focused on obstetric fistula repair and cervical cancer prevention, we identified a growing unmet need among women living with stomas, many of whom are fistula survivors or cancer patients.

The Tumaini Hub was integrated into the project to ensure continuity of care beyond surgery. For women with stomas, healing does not end in the operating theatre. Ongoing access to stoma supplies, proper hygiene education, and psychosocial support is essential for recovery, dignity, and reintegration into daily life. Without this support, many women face infections, discomfort, and renewed social isolation.

By embedding the Tumaini Hub within our existing outreach, rehabilitation, and counseling framework, Gynocare expanded the project’s impact while using the same trusted community networks and survivor support systems. Women now receive not only life-saving or life-restoring surgery, but also long-term support that enables them to manage their condition confidently at home.

In addition to launching the Tumaini Hub, Gynocare continued to provide treatment for women suffering from obstetric fistula, cervical cancer screening services, and rehabilitation workshops focused on psychosocial healing, skills building, and reintegration. These workshops help survivors rebuild confidence, regain independence, and reconnect with their families and communities.

This integration reflects our holistic approach to women’s health, responding to real needs as they emerge and ensuring that no woman is left behind after treatment. The Tumaini Hub strengthens the project’s sustainability by supporting recovery, reducing complications, and empowering women to live full, dignified lives.

Thanks to the continued support of our donors, this project is restoring health, dignity, and opportunity to women who had almost given up hope.
