On December 15th 2016, RISE’s Goal Card and Save-Up Programs collaborated with Porter-Leath, a local nonprofit, to speak to families about the various opportunities available at RISE. Porter Leath is a non-profit organization that serves children and families in the Memphis area empowering families to achieve a healthy, optimal and independent lifestyle. RISE was asked to come out because both organizations share the vision of empowering the citizens of Memphis.
Ricco Mitchell, Senior Goal Card manager, spoke about our Goal Card program and how imperative it is to introduce financial literacy to our youth. Goal Card changes lives of the children by teaching kids grades 5-12 how to set and achieve academic, financial and life goals. Goal Card has served as a positive catalyst of achievement for over 600 students at various middle and high school in the Shelby County School system. The parents and staff were really excited about the opportunities with Goal Card. Mr. Mitchell fielded a multitude of questions related to qualifications for participation and redemption. He also spoke about the positive effects that being in Goal Card has in addition to academia and conduct. Our Goal Card kids have maintained a 90% or above graduation rate for the past 4 years!
Rodney Lomax spoke about Save Up, with Porter-Leath staff and families. Using a curriculum that focuses on educating participants on how to become and maintain financial self-sufficiency, RISE’s Save-Up Program is not only empowering the participants being served but also bettering the city as a whole by developing a more informed consumer. The parents were not only excited about the training but also the opportunity to open up accounts to help save for asset purchases where RISE matches whatever is saved 2:1 up to $1000. Mr. Lomax also shared his experiences with the successes he had seen and how the various assets that had been purchased through the program had changed people’s lives.
The collaborative event was a resounding success. Several of the parents and a few of the staff have signed up for Save Up’s upcoming winter 2017 cohort beginning in February.
Please consider supporting RISE as we tackle educating one family at a time, growing and coming together as a community.
