Updates from the Inclusive Arts Course

"I'm much more confident now and these days I understand that I have the right to participate in society. Before I joined IAC I was embarrassed about my ability and the way I walk. I would never have dreamed of going to a community event at the pagoda or even a family wedding"-  During a workshop a student tells us about the benefits of joining IAC

Over the past few months the IAC students, now in their second year, have been working hard on personal Arts projects and specialising in areas they enjoy. For some this is painting, others illustration and a few are particularly interested in sculpture.

They have grown and developed into talented artists and have recently worked with artist, to create a comic book. Find the book online here https://issuu.com/everypersoncounts/docs/iac_comic_2016

The students have also been working together with Cambodian dancers from our social enterprise, Epic Encounters. They’re working on creating new dance and drama based on Cambodian issues. Working with other dancers with disabilities is a great way for our students to learn, gain positive attitudes about their own disability and grow in self-confidence. "I like working with them because I think that if they can be really good at dance so can I!" said a student recently.

Updates from the Special Education Project.

One student will join a local public school in the new term. A massive achievement for her as when she joined us 9 months ago, at 7 years old, she was illiterate. Now up to speed in Literacy she is more than ready to move into the public school system thanks to our ‘Special I class’ a class which aims to reintegrate students with disabilities into mainstream schools through creative learning which focuses on improving literacy as well as arts based subjects to improve the confidence of students with disabilities.

Our teachers wish her luck in her new school, “She is a good student. She’ll do well in public school because she has become very confident in herself since studying with us. I think she has the confidence now to deal with any negative attitudes from other children about her disability before”

We also have a new student in our ‘Peace’ class who has Downs Syndrome, “She loves to learn and can remember many things that I teach her” said a teacher “When she first arrived she was very shy, but now her favourite subject is drama. I can’t believe how confident she has grown to be in the last 6 months.”

Our Inclusive Education Programme (IEP) provides education to children and young people living with and without disabilities. We have two courses, the Special Education Project (SEP) for children and young adults with learning disabilities and the Inclusive Arts Course (IAC) for young people with and without disabilities.

Our courses inspire students to learn & be active members of society through arts based education. Here's the latest from our programme. Help continue to make positive changes in these young people’s lives and help fund our project.
