Report on the Urgent Need for Transportation Support for GBV Victims in the Eastern Cape
Introduction
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a significant issue in South Africa, particularly in the Eastern Cape. Victims often face immense challenges in seeking help, with one of the most critical barriers being access to safe and reliable transportation. This report highlights the urgent need for transportation support to assist GBV survivors in the Eastern Cape, focusing on the mobility issues they face, especially in remote and rural areas.
The Problem
In the Eastern Cape, many GBV survivors live in isolated areas, far from shelters, medical facilities, and legal assistance. Limited public transport options, particularly in rural regions, make it nearly impossible for victims to escape abusive situations or access vital services. For example, statistics show that in December 2024 alone, over 1,000 cases of GBV were reported in the region, with many victims unable to reach help due to transportation issues.

The Urgency
The lack of mobility for GBV victims is not just an inconvenience—it is a matter of life and death. Many victims are unable to reach medical facilities in time to receive necessary treatment or report incidents to the police. In addition, emotional and psychological support, which is vital for recovery, remains out of reach for most.
With GBV rates continuing to rise, especially during holiday periods when many families are together, the urgency of addressing transportation needs has never been greater. Without immediate intervention, more victims will continue to suffer in silence, unable to escape abusive environments or access essential care and support services.
Proposed Solution
Healing Hands Community Projects proposes the establishment of a dedicated transportation service for GBV victims in the Eastern Cape. This service would provide safe, confidential, and timely transport to:
By ensuring that survivors have access to transportation, this initiative will help break the cycle of violence and provide victims with the support they desperately need.
Conclusion
The problem of transportation for GBV victims in the Eastern Cape is a pressing issue that must be addressed immediately. Healing Hands Community Projects aims to provide a vital lifeline to those who need it most. We call for urgent support and funding to implement a transportation solution that can save lives, offer safety, and assist survivors in their journey to recovery.
Recommendation: Immediate action is required to secure funding and resources for the transportation of GBV victims.
