Uganda Unites is pleased to present the annual report for 2023, showcasing the impactful work achieved in peace building and youth development. Throughout the year, Uganda Unites engaged 3,596 youth, with 1,910 of them becoming members by pledging to uphold and promote peace in their communities.
These dedicated members joined at least one of the 28 peace clubs formed in the year. To support their efforts, the clubs were provided with essential tools such as guidebooks, facilitating weekly meetings focused on deepening their understanding of peace building, conflict transformation, leadership, and their role as young agents of change.
The engagement of youth and the functioning of peace clubs was bolstered by the support of 80 new volunteers, who generously committed at least 8 hours a week to peace building initiatives led by Uganda Unites. Our engagement with 28 schools, universities, and youth centre communities further amplified the reach and impact of our programs.
In line with our commitment to fostering creative and innovative approaches to peace building, we organised an essay writing competition with the theme "Youth creating a peaceful future.” The competition encouraged young participants to articulate their visions of a peaceful world and share their ideas on how young people can collaborate using creative approaches to realise this vision. The competition aimed to amplify the voices of the youth and provide them with a platform to express their aspirations for a harmonious and inclusive future. By harnessing the power of writing and creative expression, Uganda Unites sought to inspire and empower young individuals to play an active role in shaping a peaceful world. The essay writing competition served as a testament to our belief in the potential of young people to drive positive change and build a more peaceful society. We were truly inspired by the insightful and thoughtful contributions of the participants and look forward to further opportunities to tap into the creativity and vision of the youth in 2024.
In a significant development, Uganda Unites launched its first peace garden, serving as a safe space for young people facing challenges and providing a platform for collaborative problem-solving. Additionally, through a strategic partnership with Golden Boots Uganda, Uganda Unites facilitated a sports for peace workshop for football players and coaches – harnessing the power of sports to unite and foster peace among youth.
Recognising the critical link between economic empowerment and sustainable peace, Uganda Unites teamed up with Tate Mange Creative Co. to deliver entrepreneurship training for 25 young women in business. By empowering these entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and create employment opportunities, Uganda Unites aims to reduce the risk of radicalisation and contribute to poverty alleviation in the communities it serves.
The achievements of 2023 have only been made possible through the generous support and collaboration of our partners, volunteers, and stakeholders. As we reflect on the progress of the past year, we eagerly look forward to continuing this important journey of peace building and youth development in 2024, and we invite you to join us in sustaining and expanding these critical initiatives.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
