“This April, I had the incredible opportunity to join the ASK Leadership Symposium, an initiative beautifully put together by Uganda Unites for two days. This initiative brought together leaders from diverse sectors to explore effective leadership in today's complex world. The symposium was centered around five critical themes (the core of leadership): Ethical leadership in Uganda, Leadership of Others, Leadership of Self, Leveraging technology and media for leadership plus failing forward. Each segment not only shared insights but also sparked vibrant discussions about the challenges and joys of leadership.
Under ethical leadership, we discussed the expansive role of leaders in shaping communities and driving societal progress. It was all about understanding how our actions as leaders ripple out into the wider community, fostering growth and development.
Leadership of Others focused on the dynamics of managing teams. We tackled how
leadership is more than just overseeing tasks; it’s about inspiring your team, recognizing individual strengths, and building an environment where empathy and empowerment are at the forefront.
Leadership of Self encouraged us to reflect on our own journeys. This session delved into self-awareness, continual personal development and resilience. It was a reminder that leadership starts with leading oneself with integrity and mindfulness.
The symposium was marked by vibrant participation with attendees eagerly sharing insights, posing questions and engaging in discussions that enriched the learning experience. This collective enthusiasm greatly enhanced our discussions and deepened the learning experience for all involved. Special thanks to Uganda Unites for their impeccable organization of the symposium and a big shout out to all participants whose eagerness and openness turned this event into a resounding success. Reflecting on the ASK Leadership Symposium, I’m struck by the power of coming together to share and learn. The insights gained have not only enriched my understanding of leadership but have also equipped me to better navigate my own leadership path.
Following the enriching discussions at the ASK Leadership Symposium, we didn’t just pack up our notes and head home. Instead, we took our conversation from theory into practice. Along with my fellow panelists, facilitators and the dedicated team from Uganda Unites, we visited the Bless A Child Foundation in Mbarara—a sanctuary for children undergoing cancer treatment. This foundation provides a nurturing environment for these brave youngsters as they battle cancer.
Our visit was an opportunity to connect with these children and offer them a bit of cheer. It was also a profound reminder of the broader impact of effective leadership. Leadership isn't confined to conference rooms or corporate strategies; it’s also about making a positive mark on the world around us, one act of kindness at a time.
We spent the afternoon engaging with the children and staff, listening to their stories, and sharing our own. This interaction brought to life the essence of ethical leadership—it’s about stepping up to make a tangible difference, especially to those who need it most.
Our experience at the Bless A Child Foundation was a conclusion to our symposium. It reinforced that true leadership involves empathy, compassion, and action. As we left the foundation, we carried with us not just memories of smiles and stories but a renewed commitment to apply our leadership skills beyond business meetings and strategic sessions—into actions that lift others. The ASK Leadership Symposium served as a powerful reminder of the impact of effective leadership. It provided a platform for current and aspiring leaders to reflect, learn, and connect, reinforcing the importance of continued personal and professional growth.”
