Beyond the Ballot, 38 Volunteers Building Peace

Dear Friend and Partner, thank you sincerely for your generous support of the Victims to Community Peacebuilding Champions project. We write to you with an update on our progress and an exciting look ahead at what your generosity is making possible. We want to acknowledge that the early part of 2026 brought a slower start than anticipated. Uganda's Presidential and Parliamentary Elections created a period of heightened political activity that naturally slowed our community mobilisation efforts, gathering volunteers, convening youth, and running community sessions all require environments of relative calm. Rather than push forward under difficult conditions, we used that time wisely: laying groundwork, deepening partnerships, and preparing a robust rollout for the moment the landscape stabilised. That moment has arrived, and we are fully geared up for 2026.

We are proud to share that we have recruited 38 new community volunteers who have each committed a minmum of eight hours per week to actively support and train young people through peacebuilding techniques, reconciliation skills, and leadership development. These volunteers will not only pass critical skills on to young leaders in their communities, they will themselves be strengthened to counter misinformation, disinformation, and manipulation, growing positive new relationships that model the reconciliation they teach. The young people they serve belong to Peace Clubs, structured spaces that help youth challenge stereotypes and prejudices, build friendships across divides, and work together for community development. To ensure the highest quality of training and mentorship, each of our 38 new volunteers has been linked to one of the more than 30 Master Trainers who recently graduated from the Global Unites Master Trainer Academy (GUMTA), a rigorous programme that equips facilitators with the deepest expertise in conflict transformation and community peacebuilding. Thanks to donors like you, we have already raised $2,013 of our $3,400 goal. We are 59% of the way there, and every remaining dollar brings us closer to reaching every young person we have committed to serve. Promoting Positive Dialogue Among Youth

As part of the Uganda Unites, From Victims to Community Peacebuilding Champions initiative, the “Promoting Positive Dialogue Among Youth” workshop was successfully held at the American Centre in Kampala. This session brought together youth from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds to foster empathy, coexistence, and mutual respect through open dialogue. Facilitated by Abdul-Malik, Maxwell, Amos, and Fedres, the three-hour program featured interactive learning methods such as the mini-lecture on understanding hate speech. These activities created an inclusive environment that emphasized the importance of respectful communication as a proactive tool for peacebuilding and social cohesion across Uganda’s communities.

The workshop focused on equipping participants with practical skills to recognize and respond to harmful speech constructively. Through the Dialogue Role-Play and Language Shift Challenge exercises, participants practiced reframing divisive or prejudiced language into positive, unifying messages. These sessions empowered youth to transform everyday conversations—from social media debates to community interactions—into opportunities for bridge-building rather than division. The facilitators encouraged participants to take leadership in promoting empathy and inclusion, underscoring that each person has a role to play in cultivating peace at the grassroots level.

The event concluded with a thought-provoking panel discussion led by youth advocate and social commentator Kaduyu Muhsin, who shared insights on promoting respectful dialogue in divided times. Participants actively engaged in the conversation, drawing lessons from both Ugandan and international examples of community solidarity. The session ended with participants making personal “One Action Pledges” to integrate the lessons learned into their daily lives and networks. This workshop reaffirmed Uganda Unites’ commitment to transforming young people from passive observers of conflict into proactive champions of peace, dialogue, and unity—directly advancing the project’s goal of building resilient, inclusive communities across Uganda.

Empowering Young Peacebuilders Nationwide

This April, Uganda Unites continued to spark transformation in schools across the country, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and passion to become agents of peace in their communities. Through interactive workshops, peace club activities, and support visits, we helped young people take ownership of their roles as changemakers, creating safe and inclusive spaces for dialogue, tolerance, and leadership.

At Kakindu Secondary School, we proudly launched a vibrant Peace Club. Students engaged in interactive sessions centered on self-discovery, emotional intelligence, and the importance of tolerance in diverse communities. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many learners enthusiastically registering to become peace ambassadors and actively volunteering for leadership roles.

The energy continued at All Saints School, Ociba, where 112 students eagerly joined the peace movement. Their commitment to fostering harmony within their school and community was evident as they shared their visions for a more united Uganda.

In Busia District, our team carried out targeted peace club support visits at three partner schools:

Busia Border Seed SS: 83 students participated in revitalizing the Peace Club, electing a fresh leadership committee after the previous team graduated. The transition demonstrated strong continuity and commitment to the club’s mission.
Busia Trust SS: 36 students actively addressed existing challenges within their peace club, successfully closing leadership gaps and strategizing for more impactful engagement.
Busia Secondary School: 53 A-level students were inspired to take the lead in promoting peace and discipline, signaling a growing culture of peer-led advocacy and mentorship.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated team of volunteers across Uganda. Their passion, resilience, and unwavering dedication continue to nurture a generation committed to peacebuilding.

Each signed membership form, every elected club leader, and every student who speaks up for unity brings us one step closer to lasting change. As we close the month of April, Uganda Unites proudly reaffirms its mission to empower youth as the driving force of peace in our nation.

Together, we are building a brighter, more harmonious future—one young leader at a time.
