In September 2022, a violent flood hit a significant part of central Italy. The calamitous event resulted in 13 deaths, 50 injuries, hundreds of displaced individuals, and damages exceeding 2 billion euros.
The "Specchio dei tempi" school in Arquata del Tronto some months ago was on a trip inTurin, hosted by the Foundation. We promised this to the students in previous years, but first the aftermath of the earthquake and then Covid had prevented the trip. As soon as they got off the bus, the students came to us, at the Fondazione Agnelli, welcomed by Specchio's President, Lodovico Passerin d'Entreves.
It was also a moment of memories, starting with the one under the field tents, three weeks after the earthquake, when we gave pencils to the children of the then second grade of teacher Ermanno, which had been entrusted to us by the Sandro Pertini Comprehensive Institute of Turin with a message: "Even though everything is now destroyed, start redesigning your future immediately." A phrase that moved those children who drew and fought until they returned to almost normalcy. There was also Ambra, the girl captured in many photos with those pencils in hand, to whom we gave an image of those intense moments.
Specchio dei tempi never abandoned Arquata del Tronto, where it was built, in addition to the block of three schools, also a splendid gymnasium and still today offers financial support to the parents of all newborns and supports the restart of commercial and agricultural activities in the area.
