Kigezi Healthcare Foundation has trained more than 30 unemployed youth and single women on rabbit breeding in the month of November and December 2025. Unemployment has become a big challenge in Uganda with the growing population trends. The population is now at around 45 million and about half of the population is young. Many unemployed people get engaged in general business with very little capital and the failure rate is very high. Unemployed youth and single mothers in
Uganda
face severe, interlinked challenges rooted in poverty, limited economic opportunities, and social vulnerabilities. Key issues include extreme financial strain, high unemployment, inadequate practical skills, and lack of capital to start businesses. These groups also struggle with limited access to land, social services, and high rates of mental health issues due to extreme pressure. Many youths lack the practical, vocational, or technical skills required by employers, notes, Youth struggle to secure loans or acquire land for agricultural projects, which are vital for employment. Due to high unemployment, many are forced into low-paying, informal sector jobs like boda-boda riding and working as casual laborers at construction sites. The youth also face negative attitudes and drug abuse Frustration leads to high instances of drug abuse, gambling, and a preference for urban white-collar work over agriculture, according to the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment.
Key challenges for single mothers include extreme financial strain and poverty.
Single mothers struggle to provide basic needs like food, rent, and education for their children They often lack support systems, bearing the full responsibility of childcare and income generation. They also have limited job opportunities Many single mothers dropped out of school due to early pregnancy, leaving them with low qualifications and limited job options. They face social stigma and mental health challenges They often face abandonment by partners and social stigma, leading to emotional distress and depression.
Some of the challenges are cross cutting that affect both the youth and single mothers. They include limited access to information Both groups lack adequate information regarding job opportunities or business support services, poor social services Inadequate access to quality, affordable healthcare and education compounds their vulnerability. High migration to urban areas creates intense competition for informal jobs and contributes to the growth of slums.
