The Vicente Ferrer Foundation believes that participation of youth in sports is necessary for the growth, self-esteem and confidence of rural children. In light of this, VFF, through its sister organizations, Rural Development Trust (RDT) and Rayalaseema Development Trust (RyDT), has been undertaking suitable initiatives since the year 2000, by starting Anantapur Sports Academy (ASA).

ASA is committed to providing participating youth with equipment, infrastructure and coaching support to bring out hidden sporting abilities of rural children and youth in different sporting disciplines. Apart from promoting sports amongst the underprivileged children and youth of Anantapur, the program is also contributing towards their socio-educational development.

In total, 11,136 youth participate in regular and weekly programs in disciplines as Cricket, Football, Hockey, Tennis, Judo, Softball, Kabaddi and Kho-Kho, as well as Special Olympics sports.

SPECIAL OLYMPCS PROGRAM

RDT manages the Special Olympics program in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh State, since 2006. The aim of the program is to empower differently abled youth through sport, to allow them to enjoy their childhood, learn lifelong skills and lead better lives. This initiative started with two children, and has now grown into a full-fledged program with 79 participants.

In January 2010, Special Olympics Bharat, a National Sports Federation that uses sports as a catalyst to transform the lives of children and adults with intellectual disability, organised its national athletics meet at Anantapur. Some children from RDT’s special schools participated casually, representing Andhra Pradesh State. They went without much training but managed so well to win a few medals.

It was then that RDT realized these youth people potential. The organization decided actively involve itself to provide support to specially tailored sports education for children with disabilities, and has established a regular coaching centre at Bathalapalli.

BATHALAPALLI CENTRE

Bathalapalli centre is a fully residential program that provides all children with the necessary assistance for their development. Aside sports coaching by qualified professionals, it offers regular heath check-ups, nutrition and good facilities for adequate rest, to keep children’s strength and ensuring a good physical condition in order to meet training requirements.

The centre has quality infrastructure to support the athletes’ holistic development, including Football and Handball grounds, courts to Volleyball, Basketball and Badminton, Table Tennis (indoor), and a Gym.

Many qualified expert coaches from Spain and India visit it. A dedicated team of coaches and teachers works exclusively for these Special Olympics sports.

Apart from physical education, the students participate in basic life skills training and specialized education programs (reading, basic math, managing personal finances…), and are given technical and vocational training (handcraftsmanship, cooking, gardening, carpentry) as part of their daily routine to enhance their chances of having a better future.

“These children display a level of commitment and enthusiasm that comes not just from their training, but also from the holistic development of their personalities. They are the pride of our National Special Olympics Team”, said Enric Romaguera, Coordinator of RDT Special Olympics Programme.

Stories of change: Kullayamma, a Special Olympics star from RDT program

Kullayamma, a girl from a village called Kotalapalli, was born with an intellectual disability (ID) that caused her a very difficult time as a child.

In 2004, she joined the RDT rehabilitation centre for children with ID in Bukaraya Samudram. Initially, she learnt by watching, as many other students, according the process followed in the Special Olympics Program. When they feel ready to play and shows interest and desire to participate, the coaches slowly integrate them into the sessions.

Two years later, when Kullayamma shifted to the Special Olympics Program in Bathalapalli, her life headed in an unexpected direction. She is good in Badminton, her primary sport, but not her only talent. She also plays a lot of Handball and Table Tennis. Her daily routine includes a number of activities both sports and life skills related. During the afternoon, she studies, learn stitching or working with jute.

Her incredible determination made her not just succeed locally in Anantapur, but on an international level too. She has travelled to America and Australia to compete for the highest of honours. At the Asia Pacific games in Australia in 2013, Kullayamma won the gold medal at the singles Badminton, a silver in the doubles, and bronze medal in mixed doubles. At the Special Olympic World Games in Los Angeles, in 2015, she won the gold in both doubles and mixed doubles tournaments, and the silver medal in singles.

“Kullayamma was completely dependent on other people to do even the most basic of things. She found it hard to go to the washroom without help. However, today she is a strong willed, confident and independent individual. She is a leader amongst her peers and teammates”, affirms her coach, Shankar.

Now she is already a senior figure within the Special Olympics Program and dreams of becoming Assistant Coach at the Bathalapalli Centre in the future. Since joining the program15 years ago and after all the medals she has won, Kullayamma’s inspiring progress can be summed in an answer she gave to being asked once: “You won’t learn a lot about me through an interview, watch me play Badminton and you’ll learn everything there is to know.”
